For me, Las Vegas, NV. I went there for a conference and was not very excited by the city choice.

I had my first public meltdown there.

I was propositioned for sex by a man yelling from his truck across the intersection I was walking across ("How much?")

So much sensory stimulation from the flashing lights, noise and traffic, cigarette smoking, vomit...

Oh and the crowds.... the crowds are what really did me in... I went to the conference and then locked myself in my hotel room all the time that I didn't spend walking to and from the convention center. I survived on trail mix, miso soup and tea because I didn't want to leave to get real food.

What is(are) the worst place(s) any of you have ever been?

On public transport or any busy public place by myself has caused more anxiety for me lately. I prefer being in an environment that is familiar and where I don't feel threatened, for example my room/studio

I can sympathize with the Vegas experience. I don't have meltdowns but can get myself pretty worked up if I have to drive around. I don't know which is worse day or night. I grew up in Nevada and remember no big deal getting around without a map even. My brother lives there and says they build x many schools a year just in Vegas.

Same, Las Vegas. I was there last summer for a few days. Vacation from hell. I had bad anxiety at the time. I couldn't enjoy my trip. I didn't like anything about the place. Nothing nice to see. Nothing but Casinos and a bunch of people. I'd never want to go back there.

For me, it would just be particular homes I've been in. I work in social services and need to make home visits to clients, some of whom live in pretty bad conditions. (Anyone ever see the show Hoarders?)

Grand Ledge, Michigan.

A self-important small town with pretensions of greatness and no significant features.

Tangiers, Morocco. We couldn't get out of the hotel, without strange men coming up to us and saying they could be our guide, when we just wanted to explore on our own. One guy followed us around for over an hour, then when we tried to return to the hotel, he wanted us to pay him - for walking along the beach with us! The next day, I refused to shake hands with one (knowing what his intentions were) and he gave me a load of verbal abuse about being a bad person. They thought we were rich because we were westerners on holiday, when the only reason we were there was because it was the only foreign holiday we could afford. My husband became sick and we flew home a week early.

But any TK Maxx/ TJ Maxx is like walking into hell, where my spirit is ripped out of my body.

My boyfriend went to high school there; I think he would agree as would the ledges

Worst town: Tobermory, Ontario. The sole business of the town is to trap tourists who are stuck waiting for the ferry across Lake Huron.

Worst place: the Seattle Greyhound terminal. It felt like a prison cafeteria, only with worse decor. :help:

That's sounds horrible! :( I'm glad I live in a minor city (really a town with a couple of city-like characteristics), even though I often find it dull and boring. I've been in places places where I got pretty upset and miserable but that was mostly my own fault. Like a couple of years ago in the summer my parents generously took me on a trip to P.E.I. and I had a panic attack on the ferry which was crowded and noisy and then I made the mistake of going out on the deck, and when I saw how high we were above the water my nerves were fried. (I've been on the ferry before as a kid and I didn't mind it, but when I became a teenager I became more nervous) I managed to calm down but the rest of the trip in P.E.I. didn't go well for me. It was a really hot summer and I spent most of the week in the cabin with the air conditioner on. We took one trip to the beach but the water was full of jellyfish and was still July! And I was so scared of getting 2nd degree sunburn I hid under a towel the whole time on the beach. Then we went to a the mall in Charlottetown and there was nothing I found even the slightest bit interesting there (shopping in unusual stores and finding cool stuff I can't get at home is normally the highlight of any trip I've on). My parents seemed to have a fun time but we left early and went over the bridge instead of the ferry although it took a longer to reach home. I felt so guilty and ashamed.
...But as I said before, that's nothing compared to what other people have been through. In fact I've told people if I went to live in a major city you'd have to put my plot in the nearest graveyard because I'd be dead in a month. My mother has said she wants to move down south when she and Dad retire but then I'll be completely alone. She told me I can come with them but we'll have to be on a (gulp) PLANE!! ! 8O (Also my parents were planning a trip to Florida and invited me to come with them but I wasn't sure how I'd handle flying since I've never done it. The trip on the ferry pretty much answered THAT question).

I think it's a split between London, England and Gothenburg, Sweden.

London because I'm terrible at saying "please" and "thank you", the tube is crowded and noisy and HOT, there's so much going on all around me at all times... Every day I was there I ended up with a headache or throwing up at night until I cried and passed out. It was so taxing.

Gothenburg because people constantly seemed to want to talk to me/at me/all around me, it's difficult to find a place to be comfortable in unless you're very familiar with the city, and I just felt very... Exhausted by it. The constant wind, fickle weather and sometimes aggressive reactions to my accent (I'm from the "wrong" coast) definitely played a part too.

Yup, Vegas is right up there. Another horrible place is Orange County, California. You have to drive everywhere and everything looks the same, it's like a never ending, horrible strip mall.

Worst event ever was the Grand Prix, the people, the smells and the noise. That was a public meltdown for me.

It's a tossup between Grand Ledge, Michigan and Mogadishu, Somalia.
