I hate this itchy dry scalp. Is salon or non salon brands best? Just because its expensive (salon brand) doesn't mean its better. I tried something by Aveda and it made my hair more itchy. I tried Redken and it made me itch too. I'm trying Paul Mitchell Tea Tree now. Maybe Selsian Blue or Head and Shoulders are better. Can foods make your hair itchy? Strange. :/

Do you color you hair? I didn't discover until I was in my 40s that I'm allergic to something very common in hair dye. I had a terrible scalp for years, as a result.

If you don't color your hair, yes, it's probably a combination of your diet, habits, and shampoo. Some shampoos are more "detergent-y" than others, and some leave residues that can dry up and cause flakes and irritation. You need a certain amount of dietary fat in your diet to have healthy skin, and that includes your scalp. A poor diet (one with bad fats or no fats) will hinder good cell growth and reproduction. Your skin health is also governed by your hormone levels. If they are out of whack, then your scalp will be, too.

Additionally, you may be shampooing too often. If you absolutely need to wash your hair as often as you do, I'd recommend going with unconventional shampoos every other wash. Use thing like baking soda or the like.

Came to say this. You also might try a "condition-only" wash every other day. That's when you wash your hair using gobs of light conditioner instead of shampoo. There's enough in the conditioner to clean your hair if it's not too dirty. Just make sure not to use a heavy conditioner, or your hair will be greasy.

As far as salon brands vs. non-salon brands: I've used many kinds of both, and found that whether one is better than another has nothing to do wither it's a salon brand or not. Rather, all hair products have to be evaluated based on how they interact with your hair and scalp, regardless of price/source.

I have bad itchy scalp, I have found that organic tea tree shampoo and conditioner used in rotation with organic peppermint shampoo and conditioner works wonders for me. I hardly itch anymore. When I do I know I need to wash my hair. I have long thick hair, FYI.

I've had this all my life, and the only thing that helps is Sulsena Shampoo. I've also noticed that I have a lot of dandruff and very itchy skin if I often wash my hair. Now I wash it once in 5-7 days and try not to touch it during the day to avoid getting them greasy and dirty. I've got very dry long hair (non-coloured), so it looks quite normal.

A lot of people on the long hair forum I sometimes read do that. It's called "CO washing" (CO stands for conditioner only). I want to do that when I start remembering to wash my hair often enough that it will be enough to keep it clean.

I had that problem, and it went away and I don'teven know why it did....I think my diet was more healthy. But for those times, I would wash my hair once in 3 days with apple cider vinegar(to get rid of flakes) and use olive oil as conditionar and upon the scalp to keep it moisterized. I t helped for that time.

For some odd reason grapes make my whole body itchy and even my head. So no more grapes. Some fish like mackerel or croacker also make me itch. Its strange because I have no problems with clam or shrimp, Some fish even make me nauseous. Drinking ginger ale now to help with the nausea. Salmon or tuna I'm fine with. I am going to stick with this Paul Mitchell Tea Tree. I like the smell. I get the gallon size to last me for months. I thought about Pantene, but that's dandruff and I don't have that. I just have itchy dry scalp. I try to let my hair air dry since blow dryers can make it itch more. Then just fix it later.

I struggled with this for years. Finally, I tried a shampoo bar (J.R. Liggett's brand). Awesome stuff! My head is happy, my hair is happy. The difference is, it is a soap (I think with more oils or something?), not a detergent, so it is much more gentle on your head.

Try some jojoba oil. They are safe to use on the scalp or all over your hair depending on your preference and then put a shower cap overnight. It washes out easily with some clarifying shampoo. It moisturizes pretty well. :D

Go to an Indian shop and buy hair oil - Amla oil is a common one. Do a test on a small part of your scalp first to check for allergies. Then vigorously rub the oil into the scalp with the palm of your hand, or get someone else to rub it in for you. Leave for at least half an hour then wash off with a little shampoo. The chemicals in our shampoos and conditioners can aggravate sensitive skin and are often too heavy for light hair. Don't use too much shampoo and conditioner. Rub oil in at least once per week, and do it once per day to start off with.

Diet also makes a big difference to the condition and resilience of our hair and skin.

I was recommended gentle tea tree shampoo by a hairdresser who had psoriasis. She said it helped her.

You could try a solid shampoo bar. LUSH have them, although they contain quite a lot of fragrance which might not be a good idea if you have allergy issues. Some people who make handmade soap make shampoo bars as well. You could check some of them out.

My best hair tip is to use apple cider vinegar instead of conditioner.
Put 100 ml apple cider vinegar in about 400 ml lukewarm water and pour it in the hair (avoid getting it in the eyes!). Leave in for a couple of minutes and rinse. You get soft, shiny hair and a happy scalp. OK, you smell of vinegar too, but the smell fades quickly.
