One of the kids friends is getting married in February. Her younger sister got married last October and I did her hair in a Vintage style like she asked me to. Now, the older one is getting remarried and wants me to help her plan a 1940s Vintage wedding. I'm very much into Vintage and am so excited about it!

I love this kinda stuff!!

Whee! That sounds so fun. You can have Big Band and swing dancing at the reception, and snazzy hats and fascinators on the wedding party... See if you can rent a vintage car for the bride and groom to leave in! And make sure the wedding photographer gets some black and white shots.

Maybe...

... Rent some WWII uniforms for the veterans to wear?

... Find someone who can belt out a few Billie Holiday tunes?

... Same for jazz or "Bop" music by Charlie Parker?

I have a horrendously ugly brown bridesmaid's dress you can have. It's a size 12 but it's stretchy. And a painful pair of brown vintage-style (not actually vintage) high heels in a reptile pattern patent leather, size 8. I was in a vintage-style wedding a year and a half ago.

Squee! 40's retro has been my thing since I was 12. Everyone assumed I was goth, but no, it was 40s love. Red, red lips, empire waist dresses, and B-52 bombers (aka Flying Fortresses). Le Sigh.

Some music suggestions: Dick Haymes, The Andrews Sisters, Glenn Miller, the aforementioned Billie Holiday, Bing Crosby, Duke Ellington, because these are all good for dancing, both fast and slow.

Etsy has great choices in retro and actual vintage items, most of it at reasonable prices.

If you need any other ideas, please let us know.

Thanks everybody! Here is what we have so far, as a strong maybe.

For the programs, we will have some sort of montage of Dec 7th 1941 newspaper front pages scattered over each other. We don't know where on the program we want to use them, but we will decide.

We are going to use a line from "As Time Goes By" on the napkins. Cursive "The fundamental things apply, as time goes by......." Not only is that lovely, but it can be used on napkins, etc for anniversaries in the future, because it's appropriate.

The reception decorations will be as close to period authentic that I can find, which is good because they will be cheap and they are paying for this and she works at Wal Mart and he works in the mine. We are going "wartime rationing" with it. White tissue paper wedding bells, and tissue paper flowers in white and red. An archway inside the reception hall, decorated with bells and flowers. We are contemplating satin hearts and maybe rosey cheeked cherubs because it's in February, so we can use a Valentine look as well.

Her colors are red and black, and so her dress will be a vintage style that we buy at a thrift store, but I'm going to add red and black lace, ribbons, and beads. I don't know where that will be or how much because we haven't found the dress yet. We are going Sunday to look, and I'm going to look around the consignment shop here in town and also the church junk store. Both of them always have wedding dresses.

Her headpiece will be a small white or ivory triangle, worn slightly to the side and forward. I'm going to do the beadwork on that in red and have a small black net demi veil.

We have agreed definately on Revlon Red nails and lips for her and the bridesmails, but she's going to let each girl choose her own dress. I'm doing her hair in Victory Rolls with a black snood to match her veil, and I'll be happy to do the other girls hair if they want me to, however they want.

Because the WWII era brought out a lot of patriotism, we are going to have some bunting hanging in parts of the hall, and maybe a flag. I want to find a period accurate flag.

My daughter is making the cake, and they haven't even talked about it yet, but it's going to be white, red and black. I bet it will be beautiful!

This is going to be great. I love this kind of thing.

I'll keep everybody posted.

Sounds so much fun!! ! I am jealous. You should do the whole "make do and mend" thing and draw a line on your legs to look like stockings. Apparently they also used to use gravy mix as the stocking colour.

Check with a local flag company for the 48 star flags that you'll be needing.

And everyone will have to check their cell phones at the door.

Firstly, congrats to the happy couple.

Secondly- love the theme!

Thirdly- is it Downton Abbey inspired? Love Downton!
