Anyone have some useful youtube videos or advice on how to shave correctly? I thought I had it down but whenever I look at my other girlfriends' legs, mine do not look like that. I do have thick hair and I end up having a lot of ingrown hairs. So I was wondering if anyone has useful tips on correct shaving for women with thick hair? Dealing with these ingrown hairs has become my groundhog's day. :!:

Well, shoot. I was hoping someone would have replied because I have a similar problem. Maybe the others use a depilatory cream. My skin is sensitive and the rash I get from creams is worse than the ingrown hair.

I've used depilatory creams before and they seem to work alright--it just takes a long time and becomes expensive when using it for your whole legs. Same goes for waxing, which I use more on other parts of my body.

I'm going for shaving because that's something I can do on a daily basis instead of having to wait a couple of days or weeks in order to take care of my legs xP

I would use conditioner on your legs first instead of shaving cream and see if that helps. I also find many of the mens razors work better than the womens. Also take note of the angle at which you are using the razor - using it at the wrong angle can miss hairs, leave some too long, etc.

exfoliate! regularly, 2-3 week, buy a really good quality scrub and one of those scrubby gloves or even just a face towel and scrub at those legs (and all the way up, it's really good for you)

Use a good quality shaving cream just for women. Paying extra makes a lot of difference.
For the blade, I find that the wilkins for women works fine and over time they seem to be growing less and less.

finally - MOST IMPORTANT - MOISTURIZE EVERY DAY

hope that helps :D

Thank you ladies, I will put into effect your suggestions. I recently bought a pumice stone to help with exfoliation. I know those are generally used for callouses on feet but when used gently it works quite well so far.

I second moisturising regularly. Make sure your blade is sharp enough too, get a new blade regularly. I try to use mine for too long sometimes to save money and that makes me cut myself. Also make sure you get your ankles and your knees (I have to shave even the backs of my knees) but be very careful in these areas.

Dear ladies: Thank you for your advice. Razor I would recommend is Gillette Venus, I believe 'tis, with the bars that have moisturizers, those work wonders.

Ya please do use good razors and good shaving cream and go against the direction of the hair. If possible, give your legs a break in shaving once in a while, unless you swim regularly or wear skirts all the time, legs don't need to be shaved more than once a week.

Yes, see I shave once every three days just to give the hair some time to grow back so that I am not cutting against my skin.
I try to use lotion during these times to at least make the skin a little softer because I know the prickly feeling really bothers my husband when it brushes against his skin (it's like being scratched and poked at all the time ^^; so I can understand his discomfort).

I am on my last razor--I will look into buying Gillette Venus--you had me had moisturized bars.

I second Gillette Venus. The bars sometimes fall off after a couple of uses but they're still usable. Always use conditioner (or shaving foam) even though they have moisturizing bars.

I might be wrong, but as far as I knew you were supposed to go WITH the direction of the hair, to prevent them getting grown into skin and other stuff? I dont shave that often, only for celebrations in summer, but informed myself of an homepage that was about shaving (faces) for men, and there you were told to always shave with the hair direction, never against it, otherwise you irritate the hair roots and cause them to get infected/ingrown, ... As long as you always use an sharp razor, shaving with or against the direction, should have no effect on the restlength of the shaved hair.

I've heard both sides to shaving with and against the grain .__.

I think Schneekugel is correct, however, in that shaving with the grain prevents ingrown hairs and such. I just need to invest in some good razors...

I do both, depending on where I'm shaving, and I can never get a close shave when growing with the grain. I don't really mind if it's pubic hair because no one really sees it but I really don't want to have stubbly legs so I have to shave against the grain. I don't know if it's even possible to go with the grain when shaving your underarms. It would be interesting to try.

I've always just used soap, I've not got sensitive skin though so that might make a difference.

I have waxed on occasion but it only takes two minutes to shave.
