Wow; it hurt a lot more than I expected.
I got a Mirena device; it was recommended for women who have had children, which I haven't. It was a lot more invasive than I expected. But after a month it isn't really bothering me.
I'm wondering what other women have experienced. I'm still not completely comfortable with having something inside me all the time.

it's a lot safer (fewer side effects) than the pill and you don't have to remember it. you made a good choice.

I can't take the pill - it effects my mood too much. The IUD lasts for five years, so that's good.

I have one of those and I've had good results with it. It didn't bother me at all, but I'd already had two children before I got it. If you get into a situation where you want to have children, you'll probably need to wait a while after it's removed--at least a few months--to let the lining of your uterus rebuild.

Had one for 5 years now. It's great not dealing with my period ever. I am going to get another one soon.

I had a Mirena for 4 years between my kids (4.5 yrs old and 5 weeks old). LOVED not having periods. (Well, I would get a day of light spotting every few months or so, but it barely counted.) Getting it removed was nearly painless, much better than having it put in, which made me cry and was pretty bad. It just slipped right out and my doc said, "There you go! You're fertile walking out the door!" I was pregnant a month and a half later, LOL

Now that the 2nd baby is born, I'm probably going to opt for a Paragard (copper) IUD since they last 10 years instead of just 5 and I'm 95% sure we're done having kids. Effective and long-term, but not permanent in case we change our minds. Awesome.

I could never get an IUD inserted, as I've heard too many horror stories about them.

It's not bothering me at all now and I like not having periods. I'm hoping that by the time I have to change it, I will be menopausal. Glad to hear it doesn't hurt much coming out!

I had one put in after my last baby. Had it for about 20 months with good results. I only had it removed because we're trying for another baby. I'll probably get it again after the next baby. The only side effects I had were a bit of cramping on and off the first month. I had a regular period every month but it was lighter. Some women stop having a period altogether. And sometimes your partner will be able to feel the threads during intercourse, but it shouldn't be too uncomfortable.

I had a Mirena for about a year, and during that year I gained about 40+ lbs and my anxiety and other mood issues got a lot worse. I finally had enough one day and removed it myself.
I had it in my hand almost as soon as I got a grip on the threads, didn't feel a thing.
Surprised me a bit, because I fainted from the pain when it was inserted, and I HAVE given birth vaginally.

I can't use birth control pills because I'm overly sensitive to the hormones, and I bought into the crap about Mirena beeing so low in hormones that it wouldn't affect anything.
Wrong, apparently even the supposedly low dose in Mirena wreaks havoc on my system.

I could have wanted to try a copper IUD, but I have heavy periods to begin with and have heard a lot of other women who can't use the Mirena because of hormone sensitivity say that the copper affects them badly too, so I'm not taking the chance. My body is not a science/medical experiment...

I've come to believe it's not good to mess with hormones in that way at all, BC pills will never enter my body again.

So the only birth control option left to me are condoms, good thing I don't react badly to THOSE, heheh. Would be just my luck to develop a latex sensitivity or something.

Can't wait until there's a hazzle-free non-hormonal birth control option available....

I used copper IUDs for several years. I can't report any problems. My periods were always heavy, but they didn't get any heavier than they already were with the IUD, either.

Insertion and extraction weren't a problem. I know many women report problems with those procedures, supposedly especially nulliparous women, and although it seems to be the norm that it hurts, it didn't for me.

I did experience a bit of unexplained abdominal pain, intermittently, after I got my first IUD replaced, but there was no detectable reason and the pain stopped after a couple of weeks.

I finally stopped using IUDs when I got surgically sterilised. If sterilisation hadn't been an option, I would have continued with them. It was comparatively cheap and convenient birth control, especially since hormones were not on option for me.

I had a copper IUD for 10 years, no babies. Had it taken out earlier this year due to it being time to replace. Didnt have it replaced though because im considering having a baby next winter. Miss it though, because ive swapped to 3 different hormone based birth controls and they all make my moods wacko. I wonder if its worth it to get another IUD for less than a year.

I had a mirena for about 5 years, and really enjoyed not having periods (no spotting, either); otoh, I had pretty much no libido to speak of during that time, either. Pretty well countered the need for birth control in the first place.
