Nervous About Being On The Pill
Last week, I went to the gynecologist for possible birth control options. I'm not planning to have sex until after I am married this April, but my mom insisted I go just to be safe.
Anyway, I was put on the Pill, but I wasn't too excited as I want to be. You see, I am overweight and on Topamax (which I take for my seizures and migraines), and I fear that those factors may impact the effectiveness of the Pill. I wanted to be on an IUD, which is another birth control option, but both my mom and the gynecologist insisted I try the pill first for a while. I am not happy with this.
I am talking with my neurologist about trying to get off the Topamax and set an appointment sometime within the next month. But I still worry about getting possible breakthrough bleeding as a result of the Pill being ineffective. My period starts in just a few days and I am very concerned about this.
Any advice?

Not everyone gets breakthrough bleeding on the pill. I was on it for almost a year to help improve my PCOD and never experienced any mid cycle bleeding. On the contrary, my menstruaal cycle stabilized enough to actually be considered "regular" -- which it had previously never been, even as a teenager !
If you have endometriosis, PCOD (like I did) or anemia, you will benefit greatly from being on the pill. If, however, the only reason you are going to use it is as "birth control", I don't see the point since you plan to abstain until you are married ? I would take my own decisions because even if your doctor and mother are authority figures, you are now a grown woman, about to be married and starting your own family. As an adult, if you don't want to take a medication which you believe you do not need, you shouldn't have to.
Just saying. Good luck !
Your Ob/G should know about potential drug interactions, but please verify with neurologist.
I have been on and off the pill several times to control my horrible periods. I had breakthrough bleeding when on a low dose with out the plecebo days (just the drug pills, no off day), but on a higher dose, or when taking the plecebo pills that was not a problem. I did gain some water weight on the pill, but not much more than when on my period.
I started depo 6 months before I got married even though we did not have sex at all until we were married to allow my body time to adjust to being on it. I did gain some weight, but not much and I do not have to worry about missing a pilll (always a problem for me).
Try the pill for a month, see how you react. If you do not do well go back and ask for a change.

Everyone is different and an IUD can cause complications in some people and it's much more difficult to go get it removed than to just stop taking the Pill. I liked being on the Pill. But it may not suit you. Unfortunately, you won't know until you try.
If you have any menstrual cramps, etc the Pill is amazing for that.
Today, my period came earlier than I expected. I took my first pill, and I don't feel happy at all. It just left me feeling angry and upset, and it didn't help that I got some bad news concerning one of my medications.
I am currently weaning off my Topamax from 200mg a day to 150mg a day, but my Carbatrol (my other seizure medicine) only works with the Pill if the Pill's dosage is at least between 50 and 100 micrograms. My Pill currently has 20 micrograms, which means I have a good chance of breakthrough bleeding.
Since I took my first pill today, I have to wait a full month before I can get new pills with a higher dosage. I also talked to my neurologist about getting an EEG scan to see if there is no activity indicating seizures (my fiancé did this, and is now off his seizure meds). However, my neurologist said that he would like to wean me off my seizure meds first, also an appointment needs to be made. I'm not happy with this.
I don't like the pill because deep inside, due to it's dosage, I doubt that it will work properly. I really wish I didn't get my period today.

Not everyone wants to start a family immediately. I am on depo for birth control while married, and plan to be so for the first year, so we can get settled, stabilize finances of buying a house, and get accustomed to each other. The side effect is NO PERIODS!! !! And that is awesome.
Your doctor needs to know this.
I will say that I did not go with a IUD because of complications and the difficulty removing. That is why I chose depo. Progesterone only, one shot every 3 months, and while I had small, painless breakthrough bleeding, since then I have had nothing. The only downside (that can be had with IUDs too but not as much) is that it could be anywhere from 3month to 2 years before I could get pregnant after stopping depo, with 10 months being average.
