Do women ''have to'' pluck their eyebrows?

I don't know about other cultures, but in the UK I've noticed that 9 out of 10 women who I look at have plucked eyebrows, or have eyebrows what look like they keep on top of. I keep worrying about this because I don't like plucking my eyebrows because it hurts and makes my eye water, but I don't like looking different either, because I know what other women are like, they start talking about you if you don't obey their ridiculous little rules you have to follow with your physical appearance. I know that women ''must'' shave their legs otherwise they will be ridiculed, but I'm not sure if women ''must'' pluck their eyebrows, or if it's socially acceptable for women to have the choice without being ridiculed.

I used to go around with a monobrow, but I now pluck that in between, but I still have these thick eyebrows. I like them myself, but I also like to be socially accepted, so I was wondering if (by social rules) women can leave their eyebrows and not be ridiculed? Or is it a social rule that women have to pluck their eyebrows if they want to fit in?

If it is, I don't think it's very fair myself, because plucking eyebrows bloody hurts, and why should social society make women feel obliged to put themselves through pain just to impress eachother? Not everybody enjoys hurting themselves.

It's all right for men, because they don't ''have to'' shave their face. If they grow a beard, as far as I know, they don't seem to get ridiculed by other men or women, but if they choose to shave clean they still don't get ridiculed by other men or women. It's not fair - men have more of a choice.

i always liked thick eyebrows!

mine are naturally thin so i don't really pluck them and wish they were fuller

If you choose to, you can go to a hair cutting salon and get them to do a quick wax removal. It takes just a second or two for each brow so even if it smarts it's over quickly. Shaping your eyebrows can really change your face. I remember seeing a picture of Elizabeth Hurley before she became an "it" girl and wondered about the difference. Then I realized her eyebrows were different. Some people are better off leaving theirs alone, it just depends on your face.

Well I have quite a pale face (I take after my dad), and I don't wear make-up because I get allergic to it. I only wear lip gloss or lipstick which is enough for me. So I think I'm better off leaving my eyebrows alone because I don't wear any eye make-up and I think having thicker eyebrows kind of takes away the ''blankness'' on my face. Also I have blue eyes and my eyebrows are brown, and I think those colours go rather nice together. My mum said that too.

i don't pluck mine, but i don't have a unibrow either so it's not too much of a concern. mine sometimes look thicker than the current fashion (like now), and sometimes look thinner than the current fashion (in the 1980s), but i just can't be bothered to fuss around like that.

personally i really like thick eyebrows and i even find a unibrow quite attractive on males and females. i don't do much eye contact so strong eyebrows really draw my gaze.

I always thought women who over pluck their eyebrows then pencil them back in look like drag queens or transvestites. I prefera more natural look as long it is not a unibrow.

My eyebrows are naturally full. I just pluck the stray hairs below them and between them. My eyebrows are nearly black, so stray hairs are more noticeable. I'm not into the super-thin eyebrows. I see 13 year old girls at my school (my school is 7th-12th grade) who pluck their eyebrows so thin, they look so much older than they are. Full eyebrows are a sign of youth.

People have told me they love my eyebrows (apparently very thick, Brooke Shields-esque?)... I never gave them a second thought really; I just make sure a unibrow isn't growing, otherwise I leave them alone

I only pluck mine occasionally when I feel like neatening my appearance a little. The few small hairs I get right in the middle I usually deal with whenever I Nair my upper lip (yes I put a dab of Nair right between my eyes )

I pluck mines, but only because I would have a very dark brown monobrow otherwise and I have stray hairs, basically on my upper eyelid. But, I still leave them fairly thick (Brooke Shields ish).

If you want to pluck, but find it painful, do it as soon as you come out of the shower, when your pores are open. It's much less painful like that and the hairs come out easier.

I don't. I have thick eyebrows, one is more arched and the other the hair goes in the oposite direction as it should. That eyebrow is covered by my bangs though.

I pluck my eyebrows every once in a while, but they definitely don't "look" plucked. It's just that if I don't, the stray hairs are everywhere and there's no shape to them...not that mine have much shape anyway. They're too sparse too, I LOVE eyebrow liner to fix that
My brows are weird though, thick shape, but sparse in terms of the number of hairs. I think it's because I subconciously pull at them all the time :/

Hi, well I do pluck my eyebrows often like every two weeks. I sometimes can't be bothered to do it and then I've these werewolf looking brows LOL

I like to keep them shaped and narrow at the tips.

Yes it does hurt a little bit at first but soon enough after plucking three more times, the pain has gone.

I was a sex worker for a long time (stripper, Dominatrix, BDSM performer), durring that entire time period where I had to do stage make up, (the only reason I now know how to do make up), it never occurred to me that women who did not have a "unibrow" plucked or waxed their brows.
I now pluck my brows as I like the way it looks on me.

You don't have to pluck them. Of course not. But if you have a unibrow, or your eyebrows are out of hand, I would suggest plucking them.

I pluck mine, and yes it does hurt, but it only hurts for a minute or two, and that's much better for me than to worry about the stray hairs anytime I go out.

Have you looked into electrolysis? It's permenant removal of the stray hairs. I would only suggest that you have the hairs in between your brows removed and if they are very thick, then I would say to thin them, but don't go too thin with them. You could always pluck them thinner later and let those hairs grow back if you wanted them thicker.
