I'm having a hard time getting started because I feel I don't belong, and knowing absolutely zero other women doesn't help. Talking to men hasn't done much for me, as they either sympathize but don't understand as they've never been in this position or tell me things like how I should be doing something artistic instead. I love problem-solving and am a fast learner, but I've never been a logical or mathematical powerhouse which is what I feel people in this field are supposed to be.

I'd be interested in someone to exchange experiences, insight, and knowledge with.

What exactly do you do? I worked as QA, Systems Analyst, R&D Analyst, etc...about 20 years ...loved my job!

I am finishing 3 year IT school right now and I have 2 IT trainee jobs behind me and while some people get surprised by my career choice they accept it pretty easily.

If someone seems surprised a joke helps:
- I am a female IT associate. Sort of like guinea pig. Neither a pig, nor from Guinea. Right? (meaning: neither a female, neither an IT associate)

They tend to answer:
-That's not true.
And don't ask weird questions anymore.

A funny thing: The IT tests in my country are pretty hard. Most people pass two parts (computer fixing, networks administration) in 70% rate in theory and 90% rate in practice but the third part (website designing) has surprisingly low pass rate, 60% theory but only 30% practice.
And guess what. In my school there was 10 people in class before the hard exam. 3 girls, 7 boys. Who passed the exam? Only the 3 girls, with results of 95+ points(100 is max). All boys failed, the best one had 73 points (you need 75points to pass). 4 of them failed at theory and decided not to try practice and 3 more failed at practice.

Someone still dares to tell me girls are not fit for IT?

Nice! In my family it's a common choice, too.

Do you actually get a lot of weird questions to have jokes like that on hand? For me it's more of a mental thing. I've outperformed people with real-world IT experience in class a few times, so it's strange that I feel like I'm not good enough to be here.

I think you don't need to be a logical or mathematical powerhouse for the networking field, unless you're wanting to step deep into the realm of the software development.

I wish Miss Dorkness would come back. She was in IT.

She was a mainstay in the Employment section.

It's the only joke about females in IT field I know. And I use it only when I met someone new, they ask me what I do and then say stuff like "For real? It's unusual career choice for a woman...".

I identify as gender fluid so I am not self cautious about being a woman in IT field. The guinea pig joke might be just a joke but the "neither a woman" part is true for me. I am a woman - body wise - but my brain is both (I would say 60% male 40% female). IT department doesn't really need physical strength most of the time so body doesn't matter here.

I work in the web design/development industry, and in my time working, I haven't seen anything too bad. I've only encountered misogyny on two job interviews. I just want to do my job like any other person there.

I have a (nt) friend who is a highly successful programmer/systems architect, who has made a name for herself in her company. She hasn't mentioned any issues she's had at work, based on her gender. Though I suspect, maybe, men find her a little bit intimidating.

I do document programming and some database programming at my job. (It's a programming job, but fairly easy programming.) In the past, I've done web development.

My company puts me in this awkward position between the administrative/legal department and the IT department. I feel like some people have a tendency to see me as not being "real" IT. However, I think that's mostly due to factors other than the fact that I'm female.

I am doing a course in intermediate drawing and will be appearing for exams soon.

This course is all about colouring, human figure drawing, sketching, shading, perception.

I plan to do a course in illustration and graphic designing after that.

the thing i am afarid of is that lot of youngsters are there in this field and they are talented, headfast
think out of box.

I am in late 30's plus i am dull, low energy, suffering from PTSD so do you guys think this course will
be beneficial for me in anyway

Do you think you will enjoy doing illustration and graphic design in the long term?

I don't become intimidated by "people younger than me in this industry" - I know they're going to be there anyway. I just have faith that I will continue to have work as long as people recognise my value.
