Anyone wear a corset, or something similar?
Anyone wear a corset, or something like a corset?
I don't know what's wrong with my stomach, maybe a hernia? I've been having to hold my arm over it constantly to put pressure on it. It feels better when I put pressure on it. My lower back also feels better when I have something tight around it.
I'm looking for something to wear to hold my gut in, and wear as a back brace. Not one of those stretchy body shaper things, something with actual boning in it. I'm trying out a waist cincher, and it's okay but the wires are poking the underside of my breasts. Also think it might be better to have something I can lace up tighter or looser as needed.
Hey dianthus.
Have you gone to your doctor to get the abdominal/back pain checked out? If you haven't, then I'd strongly recommend that you go. Although I haven't worn a corset before, I do understand your reasons for wearing one, but do remember that it's merely masking your pain symptoms...there may be something serious occurring in your body. BTW, did you start using the waist cincher before or after the onset of pain? The reason I ask is that earlier this year, there was a waist trimmer craze where some women would wear it for long periods of time to develop that hourglass figure, and end up in a lot of pain.

If it feels better when you put pressure on it, you could have a hiatal hernia. Sometimes those need to be treated and sometimes not. If the pressure works and that's what it is, then that would probably treat it for the most part unless it gets worse. My grandfather had one and had to wear a corset for it. That is all they ever did for him because he didn't want surgery.
I've never worn a corset although lots of people do like them. You'll find them in vintage stores and also in goth stores as well as fetish stores. They typically have hard ribbing which can be very uncomfortable, and wearing them tighter over time can actually warp your bones and organs. Many people do wear extreme corsets without problems though, so you would probably want to look into that online yourself first. I would probably try one of the corsets made for vintage fashion first if you want a corset rather than a girdle or panty girdle or stomach slimmer. The modern versions of the vintage corsets are more comfortable and more wearable than those for gothic or fetish fashion. Look at some vintage reproduction clothing stores for one of those, rather than the pretty merry widow types. They are plain but more comfortable underneath clothes.
Depending on where you put the pressure you may like a girdle or panty girdle better. I am very thin but I do have a panty girdle that I wear when I wear a thin clingy dress so my lower abdomen stays flat. In some clothes, even a tiny bulge shows, or I think it does, so I wear the panty girdle. It is like a thick pair of very tight granny panties with a flat elastic panel over the gut to hold it in. Depending on your size and amount of body fat, you may have a little muffin top at the waist of that and need either a long line bra to go with it, or a full body shaper or a long girdle. A girdle is much more comfortable than a corset, and it still provides support and flatness or pressure. Depending on the amount of pressure you need you could try different things. If you only need a little bit of it, you could even try control top pantyhose, because they are pretty tight. Also, depending on where you put the pressure you will need a different garmet.
You could look at foundations departments in stores, and if you don't want to be lectured about the doctor don't mention that you want pressure to the sales lady. She may be afraid to gets ued for selling you one if you mention that you need it for that, so just put your hand where you put the pressure and say "I want to make sure I stay flat HERE" and she can show you what they have. The panty girdle I have was about $8 at Walmart. I would try somewhere like that first and try on a panty girdle or a shaper, etc and see how that works for you. Many also have back support and some have bones and stays as well as corsets do. They are just more modern than corsets and not as sexy looking at all.
So, I've never worn a corset but have worn other types of things like that, and that is my suggestion and ideas. Good luck and if you wnat some names of vintage reproduction stores let me know. Some are crappy and not worth the money.

Alright, fair enough. However, you did mention the following "I don't know what's wrong with my stomach, maybe a hernia? I've been having to hold my arm over it constantly to put pressure on it..." and out of concern, I advised you to see a doctor in case there's some underlying issue. But it's your life, so do what you want.

By way of explaining what type of thing I am looking for.
Again - didn't ask for it.
It's pretty safe to assume most people know they when/if/why they might need to see a doctor.
Glad to have your permission, lol.

Are you sure you want a corset and not a girdle or body shaper for it? If you haven't tried one, I would suggest it.
As for the stores, honestly you should look at LisaFreemontStreet's YouTube channel and she talks about vintage undergarments and reproductions and she buys a lot from repro stores and could suggest them to you. I buy vintage clothes here at thrift stores and yard sales but my vintagey type underwear is stuff I got either at WalMart or the mall at Penney's or Sears.

No I'm not sure at all. The main benefit would be getting something that laces up and can be made of cotton rather than the synthetic stuff most modern shapewear is made of.
Thank you I will check it out.

I think you can get some that has a high cotton content or lined with cotton. I know mine isn't hot and sweaty or anything. Just remember with the boning comes actual stays that you will feel. Also your posture will change drastically. That's a good thing, but it's probably gonna make you really sore for a while.
You might also want to check out some blogs and sites for ladies who wear corsets for fetish reasons. While their reasons for wearing them are different than your's (and totally fine to do too IMNSHO) their experiences starting to wear them and buying them may be similar. That may be a good resource for you as well. Also look up some sites for historic costume. They will have lots of info as well, especially living history groups that try to be very authentic.
Look around at Walmart or Kmart tomorrow if you get a chance and see what they have there in the panty girdle and body shaper section that has cotton lining, etc. They really ARE breathable now and not the nightmare crap they had in the 70s and 80s. You can probably try one on over your underwear like you are supposed to do with a bathing suit. That way you can see how it feels.
Where exactly on your body do you want the pressure and also what about your back? Do you need it there as well? And how much pressure do you put on there? Also is the corset look important to you as well as the pressure it puts on your belly?

Yep, and I need that. I have scoliosis and tend to slump over too much. Plus the bigger my belly and boobs get, the harder it is to hold myself up. I seem to have a lot of muscle weakness anyway.
After wearing the waist cincher only two days, I'm already noticing a difference. It straightens out my posture a lot and my shoulders look more even. And it makes my upper back muscles burn all over like they are being rearranged. Very sore, but it reminds me of the same kind of soreness I used to get after a medical massage.
The place on my belly where it needs pressure is right below/between the bottom of my ribcage. Especially after I eat, it feels weird. Not necessarily a pain, it's just uncomfortable.
For my lower back, I need pressure right around my hips, like you get from an SI brace. A chiropractor told me once I should probably try wearing a brace for my SI joints. I've tried a simple stretchy back brace that closes with velcro, and a truss. Neither one really fit right or did much for me, and I couldn't wear them under my clothes because they are so bulky.

What you describe in your stomach sounds like it could be a hiatal hernia. I don't think there is treatment other than surgery and a type of corset but I can't remember. You might want to Google it or look at WebMD and see if that sounds like what you have and then read about what the corsets they use do and all. You might could find something nicer and more wearable that will do the same thing. I have no clue at all about your back though, I'm clueless about that. You could look that up on the sites too, but you sound like you are already well versed in that.
Maybe you could even find something custom made for you. I know a lot of goth or fetish places make custom corsets. And to be honest you might find better items and more styles through a fetish place. There are so many different types. I'd think the traditional ones like the historical reenactors wear might be too painful to wear all the time if you could get something that applies the same pressure but without the sharp stays digging into you. (Never worn one but I hear they do) The goth ones might be a little fancy to wear under clothing though. They are made to show off alone or under something more revealing. Some fetish corsets are as well but they also make plenty to wear under everyday modern clothing. I'd really go that route to see what you can find at those places online. I'd try googling fetish corsets or even look at some BDSM sites because they will have links to other sites that might have it. Fetish clothing or fetish wear are also good Google subjects and might send you to some places where you can find something. There are tons of fetishes and many people wear special things under their everyday work clothes and they are made for that, so nobody can tell and your clothes hang right. If nothing else, Greenery Press may have links to some sites for clothing. They are publishers who specialize in BDSM and other kink books. Not porn, actual informative reading about different topics. They would be the one place I'd look for that might have links to places. Also there is a lady there I used to know Janet something who you could email at the site and ask her where you could find fetish corsets to wear under your clothes and explain what pressure you want and where you want it. She is very well known in the scene and knows everybody. She could probably give you several sites for ready to wear and some custom makers as well. I don't know the prices but if it's something you need then getting something that works and is good quality is the important thing, and she could probably steer you toward some people in whatever your price range is. I'll remember her last name before long and come back and post it. But, she's a great gal and really helpful. If I think of anything else I'll sure let you know. You can also PM me if you want, if we start talking about this place or that address or the other price etc, if you don't want your undergarmet purchases posted on WP lol.
Good luck and when I think of her name I'll tell you but her email link is on that site.
Also Jay Wiseman at [email protected] is also somebody who knows everybody as well, but Janet might know more about what you want than he does.

Thanks again OOM. I am still looking around at different things and pondering.
I am definitely going to need something that laces up, so it can be adjusted to fit me better. I have a 10 inch difference between my waist and hips so anything stretchy just rides up, and after awhile it starts rolling up under my bust.

Cool! Let me know what you decide on please. Now I'm interested in how you get it worked out.

When starting out to wear any medical device, brace, orthotic, etc., do it for just a little while at a time, and gradually work your way up. Also, if you have actual stays, wear a very light cotton knit garment like a camisole between the garment and the skin.
I have no opinion about the issue in your abdomen, but please don't be sarcastic toward someone who only meant well.
I decided against wearing a corset. I read a story where a woman said she wore one for years. Then she had to have surgery on an ovary. The corset had pushed fat in between her organs, and compressed it so much, they were practically glued together.
I don't think I could stand it anyway. Would probably rip the thing off and throw it screaming at the wall. I will keep looking for something stretchy.
