Hi

I am a 46 year old woman who is awaiting an ASD assesment.

I have a feeling I may be on the spectrum at a very high functioning level ( I think )

I would like to PM with a woman who I can talk to about it from a womens perspective.

Some of the things maybe less obviously seen in males with ASD

The subtle nuances with things like reading social, stims and special interests.

I have found many threads to be helpful, but I feel I need to go more in depth so I have
my life experiences in order for my assessment. To weed out important things from less important things.

I really would appreciate any help.

Kind Regards

You can PM me too. I was diagnosed last year at age 49. I have a job and a spouse (female), so I guess that makes me high functioning.

Hi! I'm female and Asperger. I write a blog about Aspergers with many posts from a female point of view, including critiques of studies and articles as well as my experiences. I was diagnosed bipolar 30 years ago and although treatment worked well, there was all this other stuff that turned out to be Aspergers. I see AS as my primary diagnosis. My background is in science so I try to be specific in the info I post.

Me too. I was diagnosed in middle age. It didn't make any difference to me though, except to explain to me why I get overloaded and have meltdowns and to help me figure out what to do to prevent meltdowns.

You can PM me if you want, but I may not see it for a few days.
I am in my 30s and self-diagnosed about a decade ago. My son is "officially" diagnosed.
And you're right, there can be many differences between the way women and men present with ASD. Also many differences in societal expectations for men and women. For example, men can acceptably stand around with blank expressions at social gatherings, whereas women are expected to smile and hug people and compliment them and offer them food. Frustrating.

Diagnosed at 29 - neurologist/psychiatrist told me the late detection was due to compensation by IQ. Plus as you've read, aspergers / neuro-atypicality presents differently in women.
Finally got diagnosed because playing NT became quite the energy drain!
Let me know if you still have any questions / would like to chat!

I would love to hear more about your research due to diagnosed abnormalities in my brain and a recent diagnosis of autism. I've always wondered but most people looked at me funny when I asked.

I am very interested in chatting with other women as well. I self-identify as HF ASD. I will most likely seek a formal diagnosis soon.

Hi there! I'm very happy to chat with anyone who wants to chat!

My backstory, in brief, includes being diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder at age one, and from there, more than three decades of being misunderstood and misdiagnosed. Over the years, I was diagnosed with agoraphobia, depression, generalized anxiety disorder, impulse control disorder (not otherwise specified), obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, selective mutism, sensory processing disorder, and social anxiety disorder.

When I was 26, a friend with a degree in special education suggested that I might have ASD, and while I was initially skeptical, reading about ASD -- especially the thoughts, feelings, and histories of others with ASD -- was truly like reading my life story. I self-identified as ASD for about six years before assessment and confirmed diagnosis at age 33.

My apologies for interrupting this thread but I was wondering if the reason you are self-diagnosed is because of a general lack of knowledge about autism when you were growing up? I am also in my 30's and I never received a diagnosis but am considering getting tested. I've always worried that it might affect my job possibilities but my social difficulties just don't go away and I'm tired of not having any friends. When I was a child I couldn't respond to anyone when they spoke to me but autism was never suggested. Instead my second grade teacher told my mother that I was mentally ret*d (with me standing right there next to mum.) So I was just curious if you experienced the same type of thing growing up.

I don't mean to hijack your post, I am getting assessed next month. Someone suggested writing a blog so I have tried to write a bit, it's all over the place, if anyone can give me some feedback I'd really appreciate it, a month seems a lifetime to wait. And from what I've read the experts on ASD are people with ASD, if you have time please have a look or send me a link to your blog so I can read your experiences. Thank you.
