Quartz: Last night’s US presidential debate will be shown in gender studies classes for years to come

So what did you guys make of the dynamics between Trump and Clinton during the debate? I hate to admit it, but sometimes they seemed like a couple having a spat. Fortunately this was not my overwhelming take. I think Hillary did a great job of standing up to him and staying on a civil keel. Trump tried to bully her and it didn't work.

I think this blog ^ is a little over-the-top. But it is a new thing to have a woman running for this office, so it is not surprising that people may not know quite how to handle the situation.

I was concerned that she may not be up to the debate physically, but she sure was. Maybe more than Trump who sniffled and kept drinking water.
And she didn't let him drag her into the gutter; towards the end she was pulling the whole thing out of the gutter, but then Trump got silly with his threat to insult her family.

I think she was terrific. I think Hillary is a person of towering dignity and self-possession. She is controlled, intelligent and, yes, presidential. This is a very strong woman who has always been a very strong woman, from her youngest college years.

Being a woman doesn't make any difference. Many nations have had female leaders, the US is actually behind the times on that -- not that the US should have one just for the sake of it. Nothing should ever be just for the sake of something. The best person for the job should be the best person for the job regardless of gender.

Man or woman, Hillary's qualities are that of a very calm, very strong and very capable person. She will make a fine president. She refused to rise to Trump's goading, which is what a sensible leader manages not to do.

I agree. She is a capable person and would make a great President.

Meh I don't really like her, not someone I'd ideally vote for however she might be a more reasonable than Trump...he's like a loose cannon, and she isn't. Sure she's a corrupt politician but might bend to the will of the people as I imagine she doesn't want to fail and be the most hated president ever.

Hillary is a criminal and all-around vile person who has no business being in office, and she's obviously got a serious health problem that requires having someone to follow her around with an injection, or else throw her in a van like a side of beef every time she short-circuits...but hey, I'm sure she'll make just as fine a puppet for the shadow government as any other.

How would it be shameful? What if it just so happens that all the capable candidates are male?

Physically she seemed stronger than Trump. He kept sniffing and drinking water. She also was able to maintain her composure while he was more emotional and demonstrative (eye rolling, etc.) She even did a shimmy:

I don't think she is a criminal. There is no evidence of that.

If there is a shadow government I hope to Hell Cheney isn't still running it. He and Trump should go on a hunting trip.

On the one hand I think of course I think it's a great thing that we now live in a time where a female presidential candidate does not seem to really be at a disadvantage for the presidential race simply due to her gender. Not saying that women and men are treated equally in western societies yet - the clearly aren't - but it seems we're getting closer, which is a nice thing to witness.

On the other hand I think this woman is a completely ruthless human individual, a liar (proven on many occasions) and a warmonger and would make a completely incapable president.
(And no, I am not a Trump supporter, I think both are just almost equally horrible.)

Looking at the second paragraph, I am of course NOT very thrilled Clinton is running for the office, not because she is a woman, but because she is Hillary Clinton. I also hate the fact that her gender has been used during her campaign to conceal her shortcomings (Madeleine Albright's famous sentence about a special place in hell for every woman who doesn't support Clinton comes to mind). Statements to the extent of "But she is a woman, so every woman and every person supporting feminism needs to support her" make me angry, because that in my opinion contradicts feminism and the emancipation of women - we should, just like the male candidates, be elected for our leadership qualities and not get a "vagina bonus" of some sorts and collect some of the votes just because of our gender...

I didn't like that either. It patronizing to assume that women will vote for her based on her gender alone.

I actually would like Albright for President.

She's a "nose to the grindstone type," and seems to treat people equally, and has no vengeful impulses.

Even though I know that gender makes no difference at all in what makes a good president, I personally believe that the male-dominated US government not-so-secretly believes a woman can't be president even though there are other countries that are run by women, just like they thought a black man can't be president and still do. Very little has really changed at all when it comes to people's belief in gender-roles, and if the US had its way women wouldn't even still be allowed to vote.

I've been thinking about nuclear war and death a lot. I have decided that I am really a nihilist and life has no meaning.

I've been feeling a bit nihilistic myself lately. I am just so frustrated with the way our society is. I could expand on that but I would be ranting. I just feel that the world I want to live in doesn't exist, so why bother.
