So, they found a lump during a routine yearly. I'd not gotten yearlies for a couple years due to all sorts of other health issues taking precedence. Those years I missed were when I should have started mammograms. So here I am with a lump and never having had a mammogram.

Can anyone share experiences so I know what to expect, please?

Hi,

I'm sorry you're going through what must be a stressful time right now.

I work in the medical field and have studied so much health that I bore everyone I know about it. Most lumps found are benign, so not cancer. This is most likely the case with you. Have they told you what's going to happen next? I imagine they will do an ultrasound to capture images that the mammogram couldn't see in detail. It helps to determine whether the lump is solid or fluid.

Try not to worry. Chances are it's nothing serious.

Dawn. x

I had breast cancer this year. I found a lump and was then referred to a specialist centre. I had two mammograms one of which takes a more detailed look at the breast tissue. It hurt a bit but not too bad. Then I had an ultrasound and biopsy. Again the biopsy isn't too painful.

I ended up having a lumpectomy (my lump was only small - 25mm - so no mastectomy needed) and sentinel lymph biopsy all of which is a small op in and out the same day. Then three weeks of daily radiotherapy. All very doable, just tiring. My cancer was very easily treatable so I was really lucky.

Most lumps aren't cancer but even if they are it isn't always bad.

I've never had a lump, but when I got my first mammogram, they found a cyst which was something I was told not to worry about. When they called for me to get a second mammogram, I thought it was because I had dense tissue and it was to get a good baseline to compare future ones to. All I know is that the second one hurt more because they had to really squish the one breast with the cyst to get a better view. The only other thing is that they don't want you to wear any deodorant when you go to your appointment, but as soon as you're done, you can bring some with you to apply when putting your shirt back on.
