I don't if this will be appropriate in women's discussions but I want to discuss female stereotyping on robots.

After I've seen WALL-E, I'm starting to think other female robot designs are stereotyping women like robot breasts, eyelashes, hair or colour pink.

I find female robots sexist in way, robot don't really have gender but in fantasy, I hate how creator design female robots.

EVE from WALL-E doesn't show a sexist appearance because she hasn't got curves, pink highlights and robot breasts. The only female traits she has in some her sexuality and voice. You can't really gender bender EVE to a boy because of her design.

That is my view on female robots.

We are human, so we will make robots like ourselves just as we do with dolls and sculptures and really most of the history of human creativity. And as we make robots more human, we will assign them gender because this is how we see each other, so it isn't necessary to view them as sexless objects. I agree, however, that the stereotypes seen in most robots are ridiculous. But I guess it's because sexy female robots have a pretty niche appeal, mostly single, young, male sci-fi fans who have stereotyped views of womanhood and attractiveness.

I've always been a fan of robots, and I think it's possible to give them very clear gender differences in a way that is not stereotyped.

I have to agree, even though she looks a little scary.

But, for example, take a look at C-3PO. Here is a robot that is very clearly male without looking exaggerated or cartoonish. He's a good example of a robot given a gender without relying on stereotypes. The same basic design could be distinctly female if the torso and face were shaped a little differently.

But let's face it. Women in sci-fi (and other genres) will generally have huge breasts and wear little. And their roles will usually either be blatantly demeaning or the annoying super-fem hero, which somebody thinks the girls will love to have as a role model. Robots are not exempt from this kind of treatment, and neither are men, really.

Maybe they'll make some kiddy ones as well sometime in the future.

As for me, I've never really had much of an interest in the bald look....

Ha. I've been seeing a psychiatrist and taking SSRI meds for 4 years, and I'm nothing like a robot. In fact, I feel so much more alive now than I did before I got put on medication. My personality traits and imagination have not been altered at all. In fact, I'd say my thoughts and overall disposition are more cheerful and happy.

You may have stumbled upon the Uncanny Valley:

Image

As human likeness increases, the flaws become more apparent, until they are resolved. They can be masked by making a robot obviously less human-like. I'd put the Real Doll right in the neighborhood of a corpse.

I think that's what it might be, they remind me of walking talking dead people!

Perhaps there'll come a time when living tissue is used to make them look more real. Then they'll progress into sentients. Before you know it, consumers won't want anything to do with them and then.....cyborgs plotting to search and destroy humans! 8O
