Anyone?

Among my 85 other recent diagnoses (sarcasm, but it sure feels that way), I have been tentatively diagnosed with APD. I can't understand what someone is saying unless I am looking at their mouth. I can't listen to the radio or TV and hold a conversation at the same time. Parties and bars? Forget it, I won't understand a word anyone says. Is this really APD or is it some of the sensory processing problems that come with AS?

It does sound like auditory processing disorder to me.

I was diagnosed with APD a few years ago. Physically, my hearing is better than most newborns', but I sporadically have trouble understanding speech, especially when there's background noise, or when I'm tired or stressed. It's a strange experience. Sometimes when someone's talking, all or part of it sounds like an unfamiliar language.

APD is fairly easy to distinguish from other hearing problems. People with APD have normal scores on traditional hearing tests but still experience difficulty with hearing. The other thing about it is that it can come and go unpredictably. It is often exacerbated by noisy environments.

Okay, that sounds like me. I was just asked my boyfriend the other day if he ever just didn't understand what people were saying. A quick for instance, the grocery delivery guy came the other day and he was talking, I looked down to sign the little paper thing and I could understand a word he was saying after that point. It was like he was babbling at me. My Mother says the same thing happens to her. I also have a hard time talking with some noises, I'm okay if the tv is on in the background...though, during the conversations between my Mom and me you'll here "WHAT?" "I can't hear what you're saying!" "I don't know what you're saying to me!" multiple times. Even though we're relatively close, we're so used to it I guess I never thought about it.
I also randomly ask my boyfriend "what?" cause I just start hearing babbling. I always look at people's mouths when I'm talking to them, otherwise I have a hard time understanding them.
I'm gonna go read up on this.

Same here. I've been scolded before for that. Even after telling someone the problem I was having.

I have APD. I think it's common amongst those on the spectrum.

"I can't listen to the radio or TV and hold a conversation at the same time"

Who can do that? I can understand words without looking at mouths, and hearing in loud places often a few words will get muddled up, but mostly it's understandable. But holding the thread of two different strings of auditory information at once? That seems pretty much like witchcraft to me.

Hmm...interesting thought. I always thought it was because I'm 85% deaf on one side, but the more I think about it, sometimes, even when I can hear them, if I'm not looking at them, their words don't mean anything.

This is another one of those "AH HA!" moments for me. Yes, I have the same problems! God I am so glad that I found this website!

this is a problem for me too. if i am in someplace with a lot of competing noises or competing conversations i just go into my own world where i don't hear much of anything at all. and if someone tries to talk to me, i rarely understand what they are saying so i usually just end up smiling and shrugging.

YEP! My whole life during conversations ill spend half of the time saying 'WHAT?!' SOmetimes I have to ask multyple times, particularly in a noisy envorinment. I tell people at work im half deaf, but they get confused when I am the only person to cover their ears when a pallet hits the floor, i cant stand that, then I get strange questions like 'Do you have tubes in your ears or somethin?'

Got it, too. Sometimes when someone is talking to me the words become garbled for a few moments, then I understand them again. I have trouble picking out one conversation among several or in a noisy room. Arg. :D

Same here. I used to get scolded as a kid for saying "Huh?" and then answering them before they could repeat themselves. It was like the words needed to bounce around in my head for a second and sort themselves out before I realized what someone had just said. And sometimes I can't understand them at all. Especially if someone is facing away from me when they're speaking, or doesn't have a very expressive voice. I can almost never understand song lyrics either.

I think it's funny when people ask me how I can listen to foreign music all the time, since I don't know what they're saying. Fact is, I rarely understand songs in English either unless I've read the lyrics, so it makes little difference to me!
