I get that too. I never know how to respond to it. The truth is I'm quiet when there's nothing on my mind that I feel is relavent to what people want to hear.

I've had someone ask why I don't speak more, why I don't speak much. :) I didn't have anything to say. Nerves. Really bad. Once she actually said I got better at talking, as in was less shy!

Ditto.

I just say that I have nothing to say. Then the person will generally say something like..."You don't have to have anything to say, just talk,".

Personally I would rather stay quiet.

Sometimes when I tried to just talk I ended up talking nonsense or sounding silly... embarrassing.

lol, I usually just ask people if they asked me something, or if I was supposed to respond. Sometimes I just say I didn't have anything to add to what they were saying, so I just listen.

It's funny people complain that others don't listen to them, but if you are too quiet when you are "listening", then they are concerned :P

Most of the time I speak in a mumble.
This results in everyone telling me to "Speak the Hell Up!"

I get that too, very annoying.

What is wrong with being quiet???

I'll usually say in response: you talk too much!

Nothing wrong with being quiet.

"Why are you so quiet?"
"Because I have nothing to say."

Best response (for when people ask me):

"I don't have anything to say."

A friend of mine suggested telling them,
"SOME people shut their mouth long enough to listen."

But I always forget that one.

Yeah, what I don't say is that it seems that there's always someone else with something to say. I don't like feeling like I have to compete.

I never got asked that question, even though I was the quietest girl ever. They never asked why I was quiet. They all just said, "Talk more!"

Everyone said this and nobody realized that it was such a stupid thing to say. It's like telling a fat person to "be thin." A fat person can perhaps take steps to become thinner, but cannot, on command, simply be thin.

My problem was that I was both shy and aspie. The shyness made it hard to say something if I had something to say. The aspieness made it hard to come up with something arbitrary to say just to be talking.

At least I'm not really very shy anymore.

And I'd never use that line about hearing voices in my head for the same reason I would never joke about having a bomb in my suitcase while going through airport security. :-)

I read something on a key chain the other day, think it went, "The voices in my head don't like you."

I saw a guy wearing a shirt once that read (something to the effect of):
"I'm not talking, because I don't like you!"

Heh. My hero.
