Buses. Turning, gas fumes, making more turns, people jostling me, bugging me, getting in my space, lights flashing, NO AIR TO BREATHE - for fck's sake - why don't people open a bloody window?? Cell phones, cell phones - yammer yammer, blah, blah, blah. And in the middle of the cacaphony - no air to breathe, hot, humid and dank, a woman opens a big bag of cheetos.

Oh this must be purgatory. Yes. I am sure this is it.

I can't wait for heaven's gate. If I ever make it there.....

Luckilly, Ive never had to rely on public transportation. Sometimes I just don't feel right in a bus filled with strangers.

Since I gave up my car a couple of years ago - I relied on my own 2 feet and bike to get me from point a to b - now I moved to a far out place in the boones -and buses are a necessity. Just got a pseudo i-pod. What freaks me out the most is no air. It's like people are afraid of getting fresh air - because you can *catch a cold*. OMG - like breathing the same tepid collective air for an hour won't.

Have scarf, have essential oils (mint) - will breathe in and listen to Cannonball and inwardly cry.

No problems here in Hungary. Both in Gyor where I live and in Budapest there is an excellent public transport system with buses, trams, trollybuses and an underground system. Tickets are about 1 USD each and a single ticket pays for your entire journey whatever the distance.

Ed,I know that a lot of people do not freak out about this. I see the calm and oblivious faces around me. <sigh> All the more power to them - and it's great that people can travel for cheap - cool. I'm just so bloody sensitive. And it's getting worse each time I have to get on one of those chariots of hell. I'm going to really narrow down my travelling time, is all. To the barest of minimums.

I guess I'll join the club, because I absolutely LOATHE riding the bus. Once, there was this fat lady who smelled of unwashed BUTTS. The smell was so bad, that I was verging on tears. I kept looking at the people around me, wondering why nobody else seemed to mind this overpowering, disgusting odor. So, I can relate to the "calm and oblivious faces." By the time I got to my destination, I was so overwhelmed that I could hardly cope. The smell seemed to have moved into my nose to stay. That is why I hate riding public transportation.

Nobody mentioned the people staring at you. Always a favourite of mine.

I would've gotten off the bus if that happened to me. Seriously. That's the kind of episode that I draw the line. There's just so much someone can endure. I would've said *move to another seat* but I'm sure that smell would've permeated the whole bus. A tip - just in case you ever feel overpowered by smells around you - carry some essential oils to inhale till the *danger* passes and you're in a safe place.

and do people NOT realize that it's annoying and rude? Where do these people come from and more importantly how do they not realize that when you stare back they're supposed to look away? Isn't that how it works?

I love buses. I haven't encountered Butt Lady on any ride, though plenty of pee-wafting drunks and BO. :?

But there is a trade off. You don't have to worry about traffic, parking or directions. Here we have bike racks so you could ride part of the way and ride the bus or whatever.
I don't like long-distance buses because they are too slow and take terrible routes.
