I don't have access to the actual paper, but judging by this quote from the abstract, they're making a case for more drugs to people with PDD diagnoses: "Therefore, more effective pharmacotherapies are desperately needed."

The "we don't have any standard treatment to sell simply based on a PDD label" problem is getting more and more pronounced. Who cares if people don't need drugs or won't benefit from them? Psychiatry today is about algorithm treatment, prescribing people drugs based on the labels they're given. It's not yet at the point where you automatically give someone a drug because of a PDD, unlike for example with ADHD and schizophrenia diagnoses. I'm very much getting the impression that they want to put children with PDD's on 3-4 different classes of drugs - stimulants, SSRI's, anti-psychotics and mood stabilizers(anti-convulsants) as well. The last one isn't prescribed that often for ASD's I think, but our nemesis C. Gillberg suggested it could be used too. You just have to love those doctors arguing that a child will benefit from being on 5-10 different drugs at the same time.

Try going to a university library and use one of their computers. If I'm not mistaken, in California public universities are suppose to allow the general public access to their libraries. I'm guessing other states might have the same policy.

As a library school student, I can provide more information about this. In the United States, there is a law that any citizen may visit any library that contains any government documents. Most university libraries have government documents. If they don't openly admit members of the public, just say, "I'm here to see the government documents," and they should let you use their facilities. However, many universities (public and private) do let anyone use their libraries without asking questions. I have used several in my area.

I was prescribed risperdal. It made me feel like I wanted off of it immediately. The person specifically said "it is to help with your autism"

Maybe it helps other people? I just found it too be a little too much for me.

Risperdal would not help autism... it is a anti-psychotic... what these dumbass doctors are trying to do is treat all symptoms and hope that it cures the autism... AUTISM IS AUTISM... PSYCHOSIS IS PSYCHOSIS... f**k OFF DOCTORS

lol... this thread is like a sanctioned flame war... this thread is just asking for it...

I have to go back in January. The person seemed really weirded out by me but I also did not sleep that night because I was so anxious so hopefully this time I will have enough sleep. I have less control when I haven't had enough sleep or don't sleep.

I don't feel like calling him to tell him about how risperdal was bad. I feel like telling him in person.

ok, right, everyone of us is different - meds are not for everyone - i don't like that idea of not treating autism chemically because some of us don't react to it... - these are complicated issues

in my life i have taken risperidon, sertraline, tianeptine, and now fluoxetine - always very small doses (exept for tianeptine but it also doesn't work for me but it also has no negative effects - more - there are some reports saying that it has some good effect on neuron regeneration in hypocamp - a part of brain that is degraded by stress)

but in general i have very strong and atypical reaction to meds, mostly in adverse effects - but there isn't that they have no effect at all in my AS symptoms - as i have taken it there was always some good thing happening to me, some of the symptoms got away then... but soon my brain gets used to a particular thing and i must increase dose ant then adverse effects kick in

btw: is anyone going to tell me what's in this report ?

Just FYI and all, I wouldn't be typing here if I wasn't taking Zoloft (sertraline hydrochloride); it helps cut down on my autistic obsessions. I can focus on things other than my narrow/focused interest.

my obsessiveness is useful...

especially my extreme obsession on powerchairs and assistive technology and the stock market... i practically study the three.. especially powerchairs, you cant look in my google search history without seeing thousands of powerchair related searches
