I read a lot of posts here about AS people with jobs and a social life, people that go outside a lot. I’ve become housebound over the last two or so years due to severe sensory problems, and wonder if I’m alone in this respect.

I’m 18, and it’s been well over a year since I last saw any friends. I spend my time in my room by myself, is there anyone else out there living in a similar situation?

Yes. I've been inside for about 4 years now. Before that for a couple years intermittantly, college and work FORCED me to go out. Not having a car and in a felon town bus rider population FORCED me to get the excersise of the couple mile walk to work/school.

I've tried on a social life~but people are just too strange here.
I'd get out a playing with my german shepard replacement-but I have found a living arrangement whos pros out weighs its cons of no pets~and I dont want to pull the disability card as I know I'll just get pushed out by other methods if I do. Too many other battles going on.

Do you think we would be less hose bound if we were undiagnosed with no computers? :(

I've wondered that myself. Couple of friends of mine just came knocking on my door, but I pretended not to be home because I was busy on the computer at the moment and didn't want to be bothered.

While computers seem like a crutch, I think I would've gone completely mad by now without them.

I work, but most of the time when I'm off I stay at home. I very rarely go out at all. Sometimes I'll go out with my mom or my brother -- but that only happens a few times a month. I'm off work tomorrow and I will probably spend it at home, in front of the computer. It does get boring sometimes but I just don't feel like going out and having to interact with people, especially since interacting with people is a big part of my job. I have to do it on my job so I don't want to have to interact when I'm not working.

If you didnt have a computer to sit in front of and you were still housebound do you think you would do diferent things?

Sew, Knit, have house plants, paint, write, build a model boat etc?

I fear my creativity is draining . . . .

If I didn't use nanna's computer, I'd be at home drawing.

I would probably be writing stories. Maybe even a novel. I haven't written anything in years -- been thinking about starting back writing again -- even bought a notebook to write in. Just can't think of a good plot.

I can't draw unless I have something to copy.

And I've got nothing to copy.

A common cause of being housebound is having panic attacks... if you have those, then chances are it's plain-vanilla agoraphobia, unrelated to autism.

I don't have panic attacks. I just don't feel like going out and interacting with people.

It seems I am becoming more like that now...however, in my perfect world, I would sleep all day and do things at night...Something about day that drives me crazy...It's horrible that the rest of the world wants to do things during the day...As much as I have some processing hearing difficulties, I can go out at night, even to a club and feel ok...during the day, it drains me...maybe something to do with the light, etc...that overloads me...If I go out at night, it's just ONE sensory issue I have to deal with...
