I don't know what I look like. Think of how you can look at someone (both their natural appearance and their clothes) and evaluate them on attractiveness and on a few other things such as what kind of personality they are trying to project. I don't have any idea of how I would be evaluated if I were that person. For example, my avatar is a picture of me. Looking at that or at my reflection, I know in an objective sense what I look like, but in personality, emotions, or attractiveness I have no idea. Does what I'm trying to explain make sense? If so, do you know what you look like? Do you have any ability to judge what is the best kind of clothes to wear or what is the best way wear your hair in order to have a confident and attractive appearance? I don't. :?

I don't know what I look like either, I never have :? I am suprised every time I look in the mirror or at a picture of myself...

So yeah it does make sense.

The hair looks fine.... very neat. You appear to look quiet and contemplative in your photo, or maybe downcast a little.

surprisingly, i think i totally understand you. (surprisingly for me, that is!)
if i could 'look' different, i would.
i have an idea of what i 'look' like, based on what people have told me. from this, i have my concept of it. i don't know if i agree with it, because, well, i guess it comes down to the fact that i don't know for sure what i look like.
hmmm.
i've not given it much thought before this.
maybe i should.

I'm happy that you guys know what I mean!

I was definitely quiet and contemplative in that photo, but not downcast. I often keep my hair very short like that because I don't know what kind of shape to try to keep it in when it's longer. But that picture is actually a little bit old, and my hair is longer right now. It's curly and messy. It probably doesn't look good. :o

Just as an aside... it just so happens I had just been reading about the mirror test: gauging an animal's self-awareness by its ability to recognize itself in a mirror.

(I know it's not the same as the topic of this thread, but similar enough that I thought it provided some interesting depth to the topic.)

Funny, I was going to start a thread about this.

I saw my reflection the other day in the small window of a door leading out of a lecture hall, but didn't recognize myself. I thought I was going to smack the door into the girl on the other side, and almost apologized! That could have been so embarrassing...

My pictures seem to turn out badly quite often, so I have always just thought I was not photogenic at all (maybe this is true, I have no idea), but now you have me thinking... maybe I just don't recognize that person as me. Interesting.

My sister used to work in a trendy clothing store, and thought for a while that she was some kind of authority on fashion. She would stop me occasionally, and say "are you really going to wear that in public?" I probably just have a horrible sense of fashion, but it might be a pitiful sense of self, too.

I too was thinking about this same thing yesterday, and I wrote about it elsewhere. I don't know my appearance both visually and how I come across. When I look in the mirror I think - is that really me? I cannot comprehend that I have an appearance that other's see and recognise. I honestly do not know if I would even recognise myself in a crowd of people if I had the ability to look down on it, unless I was specifically looking for me (I'd tell by my straggling hair and balding head, plus the scar under my bottom lip (where as a child I fell out a caravan whilst biting my lip :) ).

As for photos - I seem to rarely be in them, and if flash is used then my eyes are always closed. I am not photogenic at all.

You are definitely not alone it this

Yes, though I rarely look at mirrors.

I totally know what you mean. I recently got a camera, and I've been making little videos of myself for just that reason...it's very different from looking in a mirror or at photos...it's weird...

I know exactly what you mean, I can look at myself in a mirror but not in a photo or video. Why is that? :?

I would not recognize myself if I walked in front of myself.

I can't see any resemblance when I look at my daughter either. I am told she has my eyes or whatever but I don't see it.

Sometimes my view of myself changes depending on my mood :P Sometime I think I'm such a fat pig who looks horrible, and then some days I think I look like Audrey Hepburn.

I'm usually amazed by how I percieve myself, and how it is so different once I see films of myself. Those two differences are somehow beginning to overlap, though, so I guess I'm better at understanding who I am.

And RainKing, I haven't seen what your hair looks like, but curly, messy hair on guys usually looks awesome. So don't worry.

I have trouble remembering what I look like from one day to the next. I even hung a picture of myself up on a wall, to try to remind me of how I look, but I think the person in that pic is better looking than me. :? l sometimes perceive myself as fatter or thinner than I am, or uglier or prettier than what pops out at me when I look in a mirror. It takes me by surprise every time. Even worse, if I spend a few minutes talking to a neighbor, I feel like I look like them for about 10 or 15 minutes.

That's a good idea. My digital camera can take video. I'm going to try that.
