I was wondering how many of you aspies are bi-lingual or fascinated by another form of communication or obsessed with the way languages sound. If so, which ones? Let us discuss...

I am with one. And I am now currently studying it: Icelandic (old Norse). Hell yeah!

What I would also like to know is what sort of techniques you use when teaching yourself. Auditory (compact discs, tapesZ)? visually? or would you just write it down over and over and over? Let me know...(because I for one am teaching myself as opposed to not being taught at).

What about the rest of you baby kangaroos? I mean, aspies?

I am fascinated by all languages. I studied Spanish in high school and started dlearning French and German as well. In the past few months since I've finished high school, I haven't kept up with studying them. I want to continue learning languages throughout my life, though.

My birth language is portuguese, my native language is Dutch, my adapted language is English, my favorite language (in singing) is Spanish. I generally understand most Germanic and Romance languages, as well as Hindi as Surinamese Creole to some extent. When I was a fan of manga I always wanted to learn Japanese. The urge to do so is still there, but i'd rather learn to be fluent in French or German or something.

In school I've studied English, French, German Latin and Ancient Greek. English was (aside from literature) not very useful to me though, I was almost fluent in it in the final years of elementary, thanks to watching many British and US television programmes.

I'm fascinated by language. I took Latin, read excellent Greek in college, spoke Spanish, and read French.

Now, my fascination is body language, and it is by far the most rewarding. I read constantly on non-verbal communication, behavior, and social skills. I also seek out opportunities to practice it with NTs wherever I meet them. It has changed my world in ways I never dreamed possible.

I took French and German at GCSE, and am taking German A level. I'm not fluent; far from it, but I love finding out the origins of expressions / words etc. But I prefer to make connections for myself rather than research it. I also love sign language, although the signing class I attend runs on a Tuesday lunchtime and we start from the beginning every year because new people come along. So I really know very, very little, but I think I like that because I gesture a lot, even if I'm not talking.

I can't learn new languages, possibly if I'm totally immersed in it. It's a problem some people with ADD/ADHD have. Grammar in English is bad, remebering another language altogether would destroy my thinking. But I do like to speak pig latin every now and then.

I have been fascinated in other counties. Not sure why?, may be asperger's trait?, Mainly Eastern Europe. I have been learning Russian. Getting fairly good at it. I can watch a movie with Russian charters and understand some of the basics. I have been buying tapes and Cd's at the used book store. Anyone else know Russian? The Babelfish Translation website is fun also //:babelfish.altavista.com/

I'm taking German right now. I used to take French. And I'd love to take Latin. :)

:D So some of you are quadri-lingual? Wow. I must say I could not study German, French, nor Spanish due to ennui. They seem lackluster. I am sorry, but I am only attracted to the true viking language...

So about my learning skills...I have remembered the shapes of the words and letters, their true meanings, and I have a CD replete with Icelandic vocabulary that i can immitate the sounds with! WHOOOOEEYKAAAYAAAA!! ! I believe I'm doing great!

I learn better my way, rather than writing sentences and congigating them upon lined paper. Besides, I have tried writing out Icelandic and was very successful. I believe I can write out the correct congigations extemporaneously...and they turn out CORRECT.

English is my native language, and in high school I spoke, wrote and read German fluently, however that is now gone. I am currently studying Spanish at university and I love it. I love the language and I have met very interesting Spanish speaking people...from Guatemala, Colombia, Spain and Mexico. I will be studying Spanish for another 2 years and I am looking forward to it.

I love languages. English is my native tongue, but I take French at school and have taught myself Latin and a little Ancient Greek. I plan to pick up another language in college, and take courses in translation.

I love Asian Languages, and they are much easier than like Spanish. I read, write and speak Korean and Japanese. I teach/translate in these languages.
