"scrambled bag" is another one. Imagine the mental picture I get for that one!

I hate when people tell you to have a nice day. I just feel like it's so much pressure. What if I have a crappy day? Then I've disappointed someone. It's awful. Especially when someone I don't know says it. It's supposed to be such a meaningless and flippant comment and it's devastating! I stress out over it!

how about this:

I really hope you have a nice day :D
you don't have to, but if you don't, then maybe tomorrow will be better. :D

This humorous to me. I keep typing this, but my son was just diagnosed with Aspergers this week. My standard greeting for my kids when they wander in the room is "What's up?" I always thought he was just being silly when he would respond with "the ceiling, the sky, the clouds", etc.

Still learning about this beautiful thing called aspergers.

Thanks, no pressure right? I know it's silly, but I still feel like that!

I hate it when people ask you "howyadoin?"

We have lots of fun with "literal" mistakes in our house. My husband is NT, so he's always pointing out when we take things too literally. My son's getting good enough to point these things out for himself, too. It's really hilarious when we point it out to each other and the other one doesn't realise that they've just done it.

Ooooooh....I just thought up a new one.

Thinking outside of the box. What the hell does that mean? I don't think in a box, I think in my brain. Somebody on WP one time said that is why NTs stop in the middle of the mall or hallway and start chatting. They reached the end of their box. Perfect explanation!

Hey Liverbird! :D

I imagine an old bag with random things in it, like old rusty nails, a hammar, tools, paper, plastic...

Sort of boring.

My picture was much dirtier, but we can go with yours!

Oh, there's another one...Just go with it...go with what? where should I go?

Or go with the flow. What flow?

"I'll be back in five"

five what? minutes, most likely. But you can also say five cars, or five hours, or five of something entirely different. I think people should finish their sentences. :S

I'm pretty literal but I get and use some though. Some of the latestest sayings, like something is "phat," really aggravate me. Who in their right mind came up with stuff like that?

Hi, I'm new here, so I thought I'd jump in and start posting.

One expression that weirds me out is the expression "cool beans". My cousin says that, and I'm always like o.0 at it, because it really doesn't make that much sense. Is she referring to her beans being cold, temperature-wise, or meaning that they're awesome?

And why beans?

And the thing about "thinking out of the box" doesn't make sense to me either. It'd be interesting to see where that expression came from.

It means to think creatively or in a fresh way. "The box" is actually patterns or traditions that people do because they've always done it. Thinking outside of that "box" means to leave the old patterns behind and try to come up with something new.
