I have always wanted to just leave everything, some of the book I have read such as One Man's Wilderness, it was a great book they played the documentary on PBS during pledge nights, I don't know if anyone has seen it but it made a big impression on me. Also At Home in the Woods: Living the Life of Thoreau Today by Bradford Angier is very good, and shows what sort of work it takes to live in the woods. I liked Henry Thoreau's book Walden its a must read, he's had some very aspie like qualities. I had a little experience living in the mountains of British Columbia, near the town of Revelstoke, I was off the grid for one year, but I was still close enough to town, if things go boring, which it rarely did, I only had to go in to cash my pay checks every 2 weeks, so I wasn't really that far away from civilization

Yes. Lots of times. The only thing that holds me back is that 'volunteer' work means no pay and that means that while I may be feeling very good and doing good for the world, ultimately i'd be screwing myself (especially for when I retire..the money is needed then!).

I own very little and only if I really need it. Clothes, car, computer and my books thats all I own. I can't comprehend how people run around buying trinkets and junk by the truckloads.

um, you mean "wilderness" right? Whats your "wilderness"?, Mcarthur Park?

Expound.

I'm just saying that in most modern areas its unlikely that you could walk more than 500-1000 meters in a forest before encountering any type of human made object, such as an asphalt/gravel road or a house.

Of course, if you want you could label this type of area as a "wilderness", but I dint think it really is.

There are not many large forest areas left in the modern world.

From my understanding, almost all forest areas are heavily affected by human made roads.

What is a forest?

Go for it! Fill the tank with gas and don't stop driving until the needle is on E

If you're still young like me you still have time to be irresponsible! I think everybody is cool and rebel and hip until it dawns on them that they own a house. Best to leave your bank-account half-dry. You'll need $$$ for the return trip, yes? Be irresponsible, but don't be brainless!

That's why they call it the Third World. Hell on Earth. Based on what I know about places like Kenya, El Salvador and Haiti, my home & native land is a Paradise by comparison.

Where would I go to do the Jack Kerouac thing? Someplace not too sh*tty.

Well, I could volunteer. I could save money and use the interest to indefinetly pay for medical care. If I did go, I'd develop a plan first.

Travel & living abroad is fraught with any number of disaster. Money, housing, access to healthcare, loss of life, kidnapping by foreign governments ...

If you can somehow get all the bases covered, there is no reason why you shouldn't go to live in Africa. Be warned however, of the insane dangers you face. Giant insects. Homicidally insane people with uniforms & guns ... diseases almost too horrible to describe

being a white person in a black country, soooo much room for trouble there

I strongly advise against going to a Third World hell-hole

you can make a difference in your own backyard

act local, think global yeah! :)

I think the same thing fairly often.

Hey Ipsorandomo,

I think a lot of people probably have that feeling from time to time, especially if they live in a hectic big technological city... you get kindof fed up with it all..

it's so much harder than said to actually try to live away from all that though.. but going out in nature is a good thing I find... When my feet get better (have heel spurs right now) I hope to go out on nature walks in the park again... it's a real peaceful getaway from it all and it relaxes me and takes away the stress..

You're speaking my language.

It's always been my most fervent dream to just travel. To wander without set destination or end in sight, and have nothing locking me down. I'm as much a consumer as anyone, and it bothers me. I know I don't need this crap, and that I'd be happy without it...but here I sit amid all sorts of video games, toys, and assorted other baubles.

I know deep down that I'd be happy with less, but I keep accumulating crap all the same. :(

That said, I am going to do something about it. In four years or so I'm dropping whatever I've got going on and just traveling a while, seeing the world and having that adventure I've so desperately wanted. During all of this I'm hoping I can learn to live more freely.

Anyway, I started a thread about my trip here if you're interested.

Theoretically, wouldn't mind at all. Practically, I would be unlikely to survive.

Having lived in poor Third World countries (and still living in one); I'd say to you, stay put...it's not as romantic as it seems.

That was the rule....if it didnt fit in the car it didnt get to go. I'v driven back and forth and up and down so much Ive lost count. Off on another adventure trying to change my life into something that ....I don't know what. A good "Road Trip" seems to cleanse the soul, they say, I have to agree.
Ive heard that the African tribesmen say you only need 3 things to survive... water, food, and shelter. Everything else is "stuff"
My motto always was "I don't want to be laying on my deathbed saying..."Gee, I wish I would've________________ (fill in w/ anything and everything)"
I want to experience as much as possible because my daughters death taught me one thing without question. In the end the only thing that really matters is the people you care about and how you treat your fellow man,(I doubt I'll be dying thinking about what a great DVD collection I had, at least I hope not :D ) it can all change just like that..in the blink of an eye you can be gone for good.
