Do you necesary have to have any family members who have it to have Aspergers since it is mainly genetic? I have no known relatives on the Austism side.
Can it skip generations? I know this is a dumb question. My family is so huge. I know I have a relative with Scheriena.

I don't think I have any relatives with AS, either.
However, I do have a family history Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia.

It can be a spontaneous mutation, you do not have to have a family member with it. I am not sure aout skipping generations, there is no real research on that

I am still under the myth that vacanations can cause it but who knows.
Brains can be wired differently but that isn't a bad thing.

I have lots of relatives with learning disability. I kind of suspect my Uncle- Dad's bro could have Aspergers.

I am an only child, as was my father, so I have no basis for comparison there. But on my mother's side, her sister's children (my first cousins, I guess) are all...slow, I guess. They all receive disability checks and two of them are about 30 and still live at home/have never had a job/need a lot of help to function. I don't know what precisely their disabilities are, but some form of autism seems likely. There are also a few cases of mental retardation on my mother's side. So...I don't know, but I have a suspicion that it runs in my family.

It's not that long been a diagnosis so your relatives would probably not have been diagnosed even if they were Autistic.

You probably do have someone with the genetic trait, that is either below the clinical level due to high self adapting abilities or has been miss diagnosed as some other condition (see clever kittens post).

There is certainly no evidence that it is cause by a “mutations” except in the 1 in a multi million occurrence. This theory was discredited years ago. By all indications some of the genes can be both recessive and dominant in different “situations”.

Autistic traits, introversion, and mathematical ability run in my mom's side of the family (though my mom herself only has the introversion). I a LFA aunt and a great aunt who my mom and I think might be an aspie. My maternal grandfather may also have been an aspie. Both my great aunt and my grandfather were accountants. My grandfather was said to "fidget in a very repetitive way" according to my grandmother, most likely a reference to stimming.

I have a history of polgamony when it comes to my acestors on my Dad's side in the 1800's? That could maybe play a factor too.

Who knows.

I think I was missdiagnosed. It was the 80's. The only way to find out is to get re tested :-)

There's no history of AS in my family, but plenty of geeks, giftedness, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar and depression on one side, and addiction, violence, psychosis, learning disabilities and plenty of criminal history on the other.

It's amazing, but my brother (apart from being a music genius) is an averagely smart, normal, well-balanced social nice guy sort.. and I ended up inheriting some odd combination of the family's problems :)

I have addiction, anxiety and geeks in my family as well.
I have pretty normal siblings and plenty of normal family who are well rounded. I must have got a combo too.
