The Wrong Child - REM

When I first heard this song I thought Michael had written it about me, every line in it reflects my childhood, my life so far, it's like he got behind my eyes and wrote it. I think it should be the song for every kid with AS.

I've watched the children come and go
A late long march into spring
I sit and watch those children
Jump in the tall grass
Leap the sprinkler
Walk in the ground
Bicycle clothespin spokes
The sound the smell of swingset hands

I will try to sing a happy song
I'll try and make a happy game to play

Come play with me I whispered to my new found friend
Tell me what it's like to go outside
I've never been
Tell me what it's like to just go outside
I've never been
And I never will

I'm not supposed to be like this
I'm not supposed to be like this
But it's okay

Hey those kids are looking at me
I told my friend myself
Those kids are looking at me
They're laughing and they're running over here
They're laughing and they're running over here
What do I do?
What can I do?
What should I do?
What do I say?
What can I say?

I said I'm not supposed to be like this
Let's try to find a happy game to play
Let's try to find a happy game to play
I'm not supposed to be like this
But it's okay...okay

This is an amazing song, and I've often felt the same way about it. Kudos.

*Yawns*

I don't need an anthem, and definitely not one like that.... but you can do what you like with it.

Besides.... The Grudge by TOOL just seems to suit me far better.

My anthem is the low hum of a computer running, and that of my fingers lightly typing the words upon my screen.

Edit:
Awesome! 100th post!

I don't think anyone can pick out an anthem for all aspies, because everyone's feelings and experiences are different.

That being said, my personal anthem is "7 Years And 50 Days" by Groove Coverage. My imaginary world has an anthem, too: Scott McKinsey's "San Francisco" with the word "San Francisco" changed to the name of my imaginary world.

Thats a great song and does remind me a bit of myself, although I wouldn't want it to be the asperger-anthem. That would just be really weird.
It would be like we were singing about our weaknesses instead of our strengths. One thing we all have in common (those with AS) is social awkwardness, but all of our unique talents can not be fitted into one simple song. :)

My personal song-that-should-have-been-about-me is 'Sparky's Dream' by Teenage Fanclub.

I liked that one as a teenager, but later found it too self-pitying.

I LOVE that song, thought it applied to me the very first time I heard it sung by Gary Jules. (I dislike the Tears for Fears version). I particularly identify with the last verse. Wow, this reminds me of my once very powerful obsession with 'Donnie Darko' - which I watched more than fifty times.

******
All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses

Personal anthems would be best for aspies, I think.

Unforgiven II is mine

Lay beside me

Tell me what they've done

Speak the words I wanna hear

To make my demons run

The door is locked now

But it's open if you're true

If you can understand the me

Then I can understand the you

Lay beside me under wicked sky

The black of day, dark of night

We share this pair of lives

The door cracks open

But there's no sun shining through

Black heart scarring darker still

But there's no sun shining through

No, there's no sun shining through

No, there's no sun shining

What I've felt, what I've known

Turn the pages, turn the stone

Behind the door

Should I open it for you?

Yeah, what I've felt

What I've known

Sick and tired, I stand alone

Could you be there

'Cause I'm the one who waits for you

Or are you unforgiven too?

Come lay beside me

This won't hurt, I swear

She loves me not

She loves me still

But she'll never love again

She lay beside me

But she'll be there when I'm gone

Black heart scarring darker still

Yes, she'll be there when I'm gone

Yes, she'll be there when I'm gone

Dead sure she'll be there

What I've felt, what I've known

Turn the pages, turn the stone

Behind the door

Should I open it for you?

Yeah, what I've felt, what I've known

Sick and tired, I stand alone

Could you be there

'Cause I'm the one who waits for you

Or are you unforgiven too?

Lay beside me, tell me what I've done

The door is closed, so are your eyes

But now I see the sun, now I see the sun

Yes, now I see it

What I've felt, what I've known

Turn the pages, turn the stone

Behind the door

Should I open it for you?

Yeah, what I've felt, what I've known

So sick and tired, I stand alone

Could you be there

'Cause I'm the one who waits

The one who waits for you

Oh, what I've felt, what I've known

Turn the pages, turn the stone

Behind the door

Should I open it for you?

So I dub thee unforgiven

Oh, what I've felt

Oh, what I've known

I take this key and I bury it in you

Because you're unforgiven too

Never free, never me

'Cause you're unforgiven too, oh

Particularly, the last bit. Consider the girl in the song to be a metaphor for the NT world.
