Autism, Asperger's Syndome, and Wet-Brain
What is Autism? What is Asperger's Syndome? What is Wet-Brain?

Autism / Asperger's Syndrome / Schizo-Typal Personality Disorder are not a new thing - it has been around since the days of Babylonia.
"Wet-Brain" is the human history's oldest diagnosable mental disorder dating back to the days of ancient Babylonia.
Wet-Brain was originally only thought to be induced as the result of regularly over-consuming alcohol.
Top Ten Classic Symptoms of Wet-Brain:
No 10. failing to comprehend the emotions of others
No 9. failing to recognize social cues
No 8. often getting into steaming arguments with no apparent motive from the vantage point of others
No 7. often forgetting much of what happened in one's daily life
No 6. often mistaking the span between and the order in which events actually occurred in comparison to each other
No 5. remembering only emotions personally felt and not the events verbosely
No 4. incapability to carry on a sensible conversation due to becoming distracted by extraneous personal thoughts
No 3. daydreaming while under behavioral automation such as while driving a car from point a to point b with no memory afterwards of the trip
No 2. seemingly extrasensory perception from one's own viewpoint
Number 1 Symptom: being forced to piece together what actually happened Nancy Drew style even for events that just occurred moments prior in order to figure out what is actually going on
These symptoms are Autie/Aspie in a nutshell and are also Wet-Brain in a nutshell.
I rest my case.

Is the sarcasm warranted?
The symptoms described are also a match for extreme intoxication; while it shares common elements, it would be presumptuous to make an argument solely on the basis of such shared components. At the same time... I don't think this is a new condition - rather that as a species, we're developing new characteristics in response to environmental stimuli. Cognitive changes and neurological changes would easier and more likely to occur quickly than physiological changes without fatal impairment, and as our societies have coalesced into communal units there would like have been corresponding alterations in neural structures through applied learning versus natural instinct. Take into account environmental factors - as accelerators and compounding issues, not causal points - and it would explain the rapid pervasiveness of the condition, especially in more developed countries... those whose people have lived in large communal situations for longer than some other peoples. One could further question if such changes have driven conflict in the past, or if there is relevance to overpopulation, overcrowding in urban/suburban environments, or media saturation. William Gibson took part in an interesting film I watched on IFC some years ago about the appearance and subsequent omnipresence of wires and antennas in his lifetime... somehow, much like the word "yellow" floated through Arthur's mind looking for something to connect with, that made some sort of associative connection in my head.
Wow. That was tangential.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!
You say "was originally thought to have been caused by alcohol," but don't say what it's now caused by. As far as I know "wet brain" still caused by severe thiamine deficiency (which severe alcoholics tend to get as their proper nutritional intake plummets).
Treatment can be possible with thiamine. I think that's actually been tried with autism, and... well it's not been 'cured.'
Also the symptoms are not any list of autistic symptoms I've ever heard of.

Thank you for the information about wet brain; that was quite interesting and something I did not know. However, I must say that many of the symptoms - difficulty with social and emotional input, meltdowns, issues as a result of sensory overload and distraction - do match or at least mirror many of the common complaints listed here on WP as well as diagnostics.

Well, the last thing I remember is that WB has something to do with 2 kinds of encephalopathy; Wernekie's (probably spelled wrong) & ...I forget. It would be interesting if those parts of the brain were different in autistics.
Very true... while I think the OP was making a more blanket statement (please correct if inaccurate), I see it as an interesting possibility if those who were on the spectrum during that time were simply considered simpletons or drunkards due to their difficulties and occasional coordination problems. It would be interesting to see if there was also a correlation between the two conditions and their physical composition.
