I am proof.

I am 22 years old, and found out last year when I was 21.
I had been misdiagnosed with everything under the sun.

I wasn't diagnosed until last spring and I'm 23. I just learned how to fake it and hide how I was different.

You can get government help in the US with Asperger's (albeit, it's something one has to "fight" for, i.e., prove that you're impaired, and I don't see someone with AS themselves being able to go through with it all. Parents probably have to do it).

No one,

I'm not much different to "Rain Man" (I lack the special skills, but I display everything else), and I wasn't diagnosed till I was 25 [with the same label]; it's not that uncommon a thing to happen, it's just that most get hit with Schizophrenia rather than Autism.

I haven't been diagnosed with AS, however i do strongly believe i have it. I was put into foster care when i was 9 and still am in foster care, my mum never really thought of me to be on the autistic spectrum because i spose she thought my way was normal however i am quite weird. I can tell my foster carers have noticed my peculiar behaviours but i think they think i have OCD, however they haven't yet discovered some other of my peculiar habits, e.g. my obsessions etc. I hope o know the truth soon, i just want to know whether i have it or not!! It's annyoing me like hell!

OCD and AS are comorbid quite frequently. I may have both. (And over 50% of people with AS at least have symptoms of OCD if I'm remembering right.)

Yeah, that's brilliant :? I'm sure the people who need help can really navigate a system that's impossible for normal people to navigate :x

I may need help at some point (already would probably if not for my mom), but I'm not counting on any, which isn't good for me... :(

My son was diagnosed at 15. He was born in 1992, so he falls into that "fell through the crack" group of kids. I was diagnosed shortly after he was at age 38. There's a ton of us weird kids out there that weren't ever labeled.

I was diagnosed with Asperger's when I was 11 (I think) and I'm 17 now.

HOWEVER, it was only picked up on because I kept rolling my eyes in class, and the teacher thought I was epileptic and have minor seizures (go figure) which turned out to be Torrette's (yeah that's right, a socially inept kid with strange twitches and habits doesn't exactly make the best combo).

This might be a slight thread derail, but who does an adult go to to get diagnosed? I'm 22 and almost certain I have it. I have no idea what all those "<insert prefix>chologists/trists" or other experts do.

I self-diagnosed (mild Asperger's) in my late sixties, taking well over a year to feel confident about it, learning more as I went along. There's a real parallel with giftedness, with many older people understanding themselves for the first time through research, online discussions, and self-analysis. Both share the problem that there is so much focus on children that gifted/autistic adults simply don't exist for the general public. This is changing very quickly in the area of giftedness -- especially the understanding that you don't just grow out of it. As more autistic adults are identified and make themselves known, there will be less hysteria about diagnoses as something to be dreaded.

Well, how I went about getting my diagnosis was this: I went to my GP and explained that I thought I might have it. He attempted to make a referral to some guy who specialises in adults with learning disabilities, but that guy only accepts patients with an IQ under 70, so wouldn't take the referral. So then I got referred to the local mental health team, saw a psychiatric nurse and talked through stuff with her, and then she arranged for me to see some kind of psychologist who seemed to know quite a lot about ASDs, and he officially diagnosed me. From what I understand it can be hard though, especially if your GP dismisses your concerns.

I'm self-diagnosed. I found out when I was almost 19 years old. I always thought I was different, and AS is the only logic answer.

No idea. I was sent by a consoler who thinks I have it to a psychologist for testing, but he didn't test for it, ignored the results, etc., and decided I was "depressed". (I must be, because I don't go out with groups of friends, according to him  )
