This might be a slight thread derail, but who does an adult go to to get diagnosed? I'm 22 and almost certain I have it. I have no idea what all those "<insert prefix>chologists/trists" or other experts do.

No idea. I was sent by a consoler who thinks I have it to a psychologist for testing, but he didn't test for it, ignored the results, etc., and decided I was "depressed". (I must be, because I don't go out with groups of friends, according to him  )

wat a moron.

I was one week short of 23 I found out later that my parents thought I had AS when I was 16 after finding information on it but the inept psych sais I "just had social issues" well hello that is AS. I disagree that AS is unheard of it is actually quite well known in Australia now and becoming more so all the time.

the problem i think is that it seems to be almost replacing ADD as the new "fad" diagnosis for kids who are just little s**ts. anyone else noticed this? also i have a friend who swears they are self-diagnosed asperger's yet they show NO symptoms. I'm pretty sure they are a hypercondriac (sp?) though.

EDIT: soz, i meant that in between the genuine cases there are a few that are being diagnosed with it just because of the number of cases of it being recognized.

I do disagree with that but there are many genuine cases out there too.

@Catster2

soz, i meant there are alot of genuine cases, but a few where they've just been diagnosed with it BECAUSE there are so many cases of it.

I still think my friend is wrong though. she definitely doesn't seem to have it.

Hm, I was diagnosed officially at 45 yo, and I'm 47 now.

I was one of those tentatively dx by my school district with childhood schizophrenia, but thanks to my folks, who didn't believe in psychology or psychiatry, I never saw a supposed specialist.

Back then, the only option offered was institutionalization.

Now, I'm working in therapy on my own with someone who deals with children dx with autistic spectrum disorders, and she's given me some very good books by people who were older when they were diagnosed. The best book I've read is "Songs Of Gorilla Nation" by Dawn Prince-Hughes.

Metta, Rjaye.

Just out of curiosity why does she think she has it?

For myself, I'm never 100% sure. I sure seem to fit a ton of symptoms and have SOOO many weird, specific things I share with people who have it. But on the other hand I've got OCD, and maybe it's just OCD things that are making me fit in with a ton of AS things (though they may actually be related conditions in some sense since the comorbidity is so high).

I was diagnosed at age 15. My mom and I agreed that if the doctors had caught it earlier, it would have spared me a lot of grief.

I'm 41 and have just heard about AS and been reading up in books and online. When I came across this site, I realized how closely my experiences related to some of the other posters, and I realize it's pretty likely I have AS. I want to go for a diagnosis, but it is really scary to start something new, and I have to figure out if my health insurance will cover it, but I'll get there. I feel if it had been known when I was young, I might have been able to cope better than I do. It feels like a relief sometimes to know what some of the things I do are called and why I'm doing them and that others also deal with the same issues, and that it might make us a lot stronger people to be able to deal with it. I don't feel strong but maybe!

I ws diagnosed a year and half ago, I was 18, Im 19 now. Even though I had gone to some sort of psych when I was 8-11, nobody thought it was AS, or even knew what it was maybe. They thought I just had selective mutism, and severe social anxiety. Which I did, but nobody knew I also had Aspergers too. Having a combination of both pretty much guarenteed doom in my ability to socialize. Ive improved a lot in the last 2 years.

Supposedly she has a few OCD symptoms, which apparently disappear while she's at school or around me. I tried to tell he even is she has OCD symptoms it doesn't mean that it's asperger's, but she wouldn't listen.

Had not heard of AS until 6 months back, soon as I did I looked into it cos it fitted my behaviour. I have been looking for an answer to 'me' for many years. Got my dx a few weeks ago and I now feel the best I have in my life, finally I have got answers, this forum has been fantastic, and my family and friends understand me so much better. The DX is not an excuse to stay the same I see it as a tool to improve.
