First of all, it was water. I was obsessed with how water acted while I poured it from one container to another, down slants at different angles etc.

When I became three years old, it went over the Chemistry. My dad is a biochemist, and he was always happy to explain the details about advanced chemistry to me :) I still remember in primary school, all the teachers didn't really understand what I was talking about, and told me I "didn't need that much detail at this level".

At the same time, during my youth, I became obsessed with steam locomotives. I still have a large collection of memorobilia, including huge arrays of books, magazines, hornby models & track, photographs, etc.

Next, it became computer games. Heh, I wouldn't talk about anything than the game I was on for one month. Highly annoying to my peers.

Next, astronomical physics, particularly black holes, QSOs (Quasar Stellar Objects) & the string theory.

Finally, where I am today: computers. I spend all of my free time in front of either this laptop, my workstation or my server. The Gecko rendering engine, to be particular, http, markup and scripting standards. I suppose One could combine them all into the DOM as well as http server workings and standards.

Lots of obessions around here - what a wonderful thing.

My obsessions are:

1) Computers, everything about them except the electronics and the math.
2) Geographical Information Systems - my favorite software.
3) Linux (new as of 4 months ago)
4) Open-source software - OpenOffice.org - free office suite that can read/write Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
5) Emergency vehicles, personnel. I can identify what emergency vehicle is coming/going from 5 blocks to 1/2 mile away by the siren. Know all the local routes.
6) WrongPlanet.net
7) Reading
8) Helping other people learn how to do things - swimming, computers, GIS, software, etc. It makes me feel happy.
9) Martial Arts

My son Nicco (4 HFA) obsessions have always changed quickly- well, maybe not really quick....
some of his past :
trains
construction vehicles of any kind
always stating colors when talking about something
0ne of his strangest- touching mens belt(this was one of his first, and this is how I got him to say some of his first words... touch, man, belt)
balls of any kind
washing his hands( would go through a container of liquid soap while washing his hands each time---)
dalmation dogs

his current:
trains
dalmation dogs
anything to do with death- scary movies
star wars (the original)
anything on the scfi channel
amongst other things......

Michele

By the way, I have always and will always use his obsessions to fuel his learning experience.... most of his past obsessions were either rewards (ex.. for doing good work- ABA/table time, he would get to go to the train yard and watch the men working; they let him come in anytime- boy does he love this) or I encouraged him to talk/learn new words, etc.....
by using his obsessions...

Be proud of your obsessions... and remember, it's NOT a dirty word. Take it back for yourself and use it how you see positively fit :)

oh I forgot water for my son...
someone mentioned it-
how can I forget-
when we go to home depot- he has to go to see the water fountain in the home and garden center...
when we got to this amusement park the first thing he has to do is see the water wheel at this ice cream stand.
my other kids hate it- BUT we do it becasue it does not hurt anyone and it would ruin his day and all of ours if we did not see it.
Michele

None of my obsessions really leave. They'll just lie dormant waiting for something to wake them up. It gets annoying when I'll think I'm over something and then have to constantly go back to it. Most of my obsessions are books and any movies, music, etc. that go along with them. Some of my bigger book obsessions were Harry Potter (I also was constantly reading fanfics), Lord of the Rings, and Les Miserables (if that's how you spell it). I've also been obsessed with Star Wars, but just the movies. I'd watch them over and over. Crocheting has also been an obsession. It would have to be to make five afghans in a year and half. I'm sure there's more, that's just all i can think of at the moment.

My obsessions right now:

 boycotting chewing gum (my biggest one right now [because too many people at my school chew gum])
 places linked to a website my mom sent me a link to (although I haven't visited any in the past two weeks)
 Charmin
 bologna
 jokes having to do with audience participation (i.e. throwing toast at a movie screen)
 this song I heard on Vh1 classic called "Time Warp" (and the little scene before it)
 going to online forums
 writing (mostly gross weird comedy gum-boycotting stuff nowadays)
 Untitled Gross-Out Series (something I wrote)
 Vh1 Classic!! !!
 being weird
 parodying songs (I wrote three so far this year [a Charmin jingle spoof, my version of a song about gum addiction, and one I called "Good Smell" that's a parody of "Time Warp" {I'll boycott gum in ANYTHING I can fit it into}])
 my fort (a tiny building attached to the shed me and my dad built)
 Meat Loaf (One day, I wanted to unpack a little at my house, and me and my mom found some music! my mom decided to look in the shed for more and she found more.)
 behind-the-scenes stuff
 Going on my computer!! !! !! !! !!
 the online Yahoo! versions of supermarket tabloids (even though I know most of that stuff they write is just supposed to be silly)
 the name Goolash (It used to be Iggy, but now it's Goolash. Don't ask.)
 ghost stories

All these were my obsessions the day I posted this. Keep in mind "ferrets" was not listed because I don't consider it weird enough to be classified as an "obsession." And yes, some of them are connected.
