yethere is a link.
it is believed to be a gentic link between parents and offspring.
one of your parents is highly likely to have AS.

Well, my mother can see the connection. Apparently, I have a collection of the least desirable personality traits from my parents. Or as she put it "You inherited all the crap".

err i thought it was clear but what i did mean was if parents smuther you too much could it give you AS and i think it's a good question simply as if you hide your child away then obviously itt'l give em social problems and it would explain why it's on the rise.

Parental smothering can't GIVE you AS, but smothering CAN cause the problems with executive function and independance to become more pronounced later in life. If you are never taught to do things for yourself, you will feel helpless when it comes time to do them.

That has nothing to do with why you have AS. You were born with it! Mine is Genetic. I got it from my dad, who is a closeted Aspie.

Geneticaly, yes it their fault. The theroy that Autism/Asperger's being caused by a parents lack of affection or too much of it has long been outdated and proven to be false. Imost likely got it from my biological mother who is low functning autistic.

No, having a 'smuthering' mother cannot give you AS.

Ironically, when mothers were held to blame for autism (as was once the case), it was for being too cold rather than 'smuthering'; they were referred to as refrigerator mothers.

I expect you will find the percentage of persons with AS who have a 'smuthering' mother, is no greater than the percentage of people without AS who have the same.

You do not indicate that your sister has AS. Does she not have the same mother as you?

I don't think my parents smothered me.

I believe my AS is my dad's fault, in that I inherited it from him :D

No, it's not anyone's fault. In my case, I think I just had a difference.

Signs of spectrumite behavior gallop wildly on both sides of my family tree. I think the surprising part is that I have two siblings who don't seem to be on the spectrum! :)

I think the answer lies in their statement that you got all the bad stuff. ASD is genetic, I suggest that you ask them which side of the family the 'bad stuff' most resembles, then you've got your culprit. You cannot catch / learn to be AS,. it is genetic. Their are some unsubstantiated theories that ASD can also be caused by chemical factors after birth. There is nothing to suggest that nurture or the lack of it can cause ASD.

Hmm, no. I think my parents' deep love and support helped me become the functioning individual I am today.

a decade ago, when I still had no idea that I was an aspie, I read that shrinks in the USA were of the opinion that autism was on the rise because parents didn't hug, cuddle their children enough.

They are afraid to take a bath with their children because of the possible suspicion of child abuse...that's what I read...
