What adult services would you all like to see provided in your state for those on the Spectrum?

Job services & help with getting through a job interview.* My son is having a very hard time with this, and despite the fact that I've gone to various agencies to get him help in this area, no one seems to want to step up to the plate and help him. I've talked to him, but he doesn't really listen to me much, so someone he didn't know personally would make more an impact on him. They had programs like this in California, but it's hard to find them elsewhere.

*He is extremely shy and won't even look people in the face, let alone the eyes. He goes nonverbal in front of strangers, too. They have to pry one-word answers out of him. I had the same problem and I had toforce myself to do this. He can't - or won't.

rainstorm5,

What city are you in now? I'm curious, because I studied that a lot, I have had dozens of interviews, with a high success rate, and have given a lot of interviews. If I can help, I would certainly be willing to.

We need more help getting through college! Apparently the BVR here hasn't sent anyone to college in three years.

there should be an indoctrination and guide to AS adults who turn 18/21 to explain what it is to have AS as an adult.
preparation for diffiscultues in relatinships getting a job, going to uni, living alone.

we all have a diagnosis of AS....do we all knwo what this means?

do we understand what this can entail?

a transition "course" would be helpfull.

As like to have things laid out , we also like to see distinct delineated, well delineated transitonal "doors" in our lives..will help a few to focus on growing up and maturing.

I would like some place where I can meet some Aspies, especially ones about my age. I am sure they are all over but I have never knowingly met one. As it is I feel like an anomaly.

I'd like to see more help in getting diagnosed as an adult first of all.

Then I'd really like some help with remembering to pay bills, or figure out in which order and where to find childcare, jobs, or other needed services. It would be nice if this would include help after I've had a meltdown, or even better to prevent a cataclysmic meltdown. I get overwhelmed with that kind of detail. Nothing intrusive, just the kind of knowledgeable help that helps me get or do what I need without making me feel like an idiot.

a day program to help teach me social skills, occupational skills, daily living skills, and thats organized, scheduled and staff that work especially with autism, and scheduled activities like crafts or other motor teaching skills. I would benefit from that so much

I have a theory but I’m far from being any kind of an expert.
I think that the minds of NTs are generally dissociative and the minds of AS are generally coadunate.

This is great! Thank you all for your input! With your permission, I would like to print this off and show it to those whom I have a meeting with to discuss what adult services are needed.

For the record, for how much this counts, I am an adult with AS. I wanted to pick fellow Aspie brains on the subject to see what you all thought. :D

Firstly, what others have said about help with getting a job is spot on. There are problems on both sides: we're often lousy at marketing ourselves to employers AND employers are often uninformed about ASDs, but it's less straightforward to integrate us into the workplace than, for instance, someone who's deaf. It's less obvious what we need. Secondly, maybe a drop-in where people can come and discuss any real-life issues they have. One of the most useful resources that any organisation can provide, I think, is a kind of AS-NT "interpreter" - someone who is able to understand something of both perspectives. If necessary, they might even be able to accompany someone in an advocacy role, when they have to deal with other professionals.
