So many people got salamander! did anyone think of spider?

Yes. Mind you, my girlfriend is obsessed with spiders, it would be hard not to!

My list was: spider, snake, shrew, seagull, sea lion, sea horse, salmon, sidewinder, sparrow, swallow. Yes, I know sidewinder is a kind of snake, but it counts, dammit!

That's pretty hard on the spot:

Shark, Salamander, Snake, Sea Sponge.

When I thought of Sea Sponge, the minute ran out, and then it all flooded in, like Skunk and Seagull and Spider. Grr. I hate when I crack under-pressue.

I know I have EDF because I was distractedly paying more attention to the clock than trying to think of animals.

I got three: snake, then salamander, then seahorse. I got serpent, too, but I didn't count it cause that was the same as snake and I considered it a bit of a cheat, hehe.

I got three. Snake, shark, and stingray. I was staring at the wall trying to think of others for half a minute. I couldn't get the word fish out of my mind.

Spider, snake, sloth, squid, salamander, stickleback, starfish.

I got 7. Although I thought of skunk and seahorse right after. I found myself stalling after the first three because I kept thinking 'serpent'. But I didn't really have too much trouble once I got going again.

Wow.

I know I'm digging this thread out of the archives' archives, but was wondering - where did the test come from, and is there an explanation for the results?

I got just one - snake - then saw I had a full 60 seconds so I tried again.
Only got sloth, then was fixated on chipmunk and why it wasn't an s animal.

Would love to hear more about how this works.

2. Seal and skink.

My mind spent the first 45 seconds going "Seal... seal... seal... seal... uhh... Sandshrew... no, that's a Pokemon, not an animal... seal.. seal... " etc.

(Some of the ones people thought of are so obvious, why didn't I think of them?)

from this webpage : http://www.minddisorders.com/Del-Fi/Executive-function.html
Quote:
Verbal fluency tests that ask people to say a number of words in a certain period of time can also reveal problems with executive function. One commonly used test asks individuals to name as many animals or as many words beginning with a particular letter as they can in one minute. A person with executive function deficits may find the animal naming task simple, but struggle to name words beginning with a particular letter, since this task requires people to organize concepts in a novel way.

Yes, dinosaurs actually do count. I was given this test as part of a neuropsych battery (I had to name animals- no limit on the letter), and probably half of mine were dinosaurs (I asked and she said it was okay).
