What bad advice have people given you in relation to social difficulties?

"Be more Christ-like." What kind of Christ? The one who knotted a cord and whipped the money-changers until they left the temple? The one who told the people to let the children come to him? The one who let himself be whipped, beaten, and then nailed to a cross to die in the desert sun?

The one who rose above all that and used the experience to teach us to be compassionate to each other. He had a long row to hoe back then, and still does.

Gah! By the blood of Jesus, right? As long as it's in Jesus' name, it's good and right... (puke)
f****n' stupid. Anti-everything Christ ever stood for.

To egnore my son's behaviour of handflapping and biting because he's proberly attention seeking.
Now we are waiting for an assesment for an ASD.

But the ultimate bad advice anyone can give me is: "Hurry up." I'm at my worst when I'm being rushed.

Here is the worst one:

"They're just words."

Don't they realize words hurt just as much?

I thought of another one:

"Just talk! Say whatever you're thinking."

Yeah, that would work if only my mind didn't go completely blank every time someone looks at me.

 :?:

I've gotten that one so many times along with it's variants,

"people will like you if you just open up more"

"just talk about what everyone else is talking about"

and my personal fav:

"It's not that hard. Just walk up to people, and start talking."

I tried that on the rare occasions that I could think of something to say. It did not go well.

"Anyone who makes fun of you is just jealous."

Yeah, people think my poor social skills and orthodontia are totally rad.

"Stop overreacting."

"You could do it if you only tried."

And the one who tells me that I can do it if I only try is often involved in preventing me from doing it.

Much of bad advice I've come across in life were from biased NTs who think they could pass for a doctor or psychologist (but fail miserably).

yep, same here too. My mom is bad about that.

Also I agree with what everyone has said regarding bullying.
