Why do some people do drugs? Because we are all different, and individual differences should be accepted.

I see cameras as tools to capture memories. Expecting people to smile in every picture is a way to trick yourself into thinking that life is only full of happy memories. I want reality, not a pretend made up face.

Isn't having a smile the same as wearing designer clothes? You are expected to, but if you do not, you are looked down upon or are deemed untrustworthy?

(probably bad reference there)

You're right- it is a bad reference.
Smiles don't just portray "happiness".
I smile when I meet someone for the first time to hopefully show them that I'm a nice person.
I smile when I'm listening to someone talk so they know I'm involved in their conversation.
I smile if I'm giving right-of-way to an elderly lady with a shopping cart.
There are all sorts of reasons to smile.
Only you can answer why you should- not why you shouldn't have to.

Smiles last for a few seconds. There is a difference.

Again, only you can give yourself a reason to smile.
You're certainly good at finding excuses not to.
Can you think of three reasons to smile?

If not, then nothing else needs to be said.

3 good reasons to smile:

It can put a person at ease and know you are thinking nice thoughts about them.

It can make someone feel another person cares about them.

It can lead to a conversation.

I know that the people who make my life a hell are people who don't smile enough. Although I have nothing against people who don't smile for the reason they're sad or thoughtful. But too many people don't smile simply because they're rude and ignorant. Having a bad attitude causes unnecessary conflict and damage to society.

Mind you it's not that black and white. For example France as a general rule is full of smiling, wine sipping, coffee drinking people. Hence its position as number 1 tourist destination in the world but because its people are generally so content the country is not very creative - it has little reason to be. On the other hand the somewhat stoic and dour Germans have contributed a lot of creativity to engineering and technological inventions because I suppose people there have more reason to avoid talking to others and spend time pursuing a more solitary, intellectual interest.

Okay, but how about a reason to smile in a photograph?

I think this is very moment-dependent. I've taken some very good pictures where I'm not smiling but I don't look like a depressed grump-head either.
Ask yourself: How do I want people to perceive me?

Ahh, good question. And perfectly good reason, in my opinion.
I want to be percieved as a pleasant and kind person. And most people consider smiling people to be pleasant and kind.
