I have informally diagnosed myself with Asperger's a few years ago. I am introverted with obsessive interests, sometimes a perfectionist to a fault, highly aggressive without regard to the feelings of others when caught at the wrong moment, very left brained, extremely verboise and logical with good problem solving abilities, excellent at analyzing the motives of others, and challenged when it comes to visual spatial abilities. I am excellent at singing and have also won trophies creating aerodynamic cars and rockets. My social skills are subpar unless I actually have an interest in the conversation.

The parts I have in bold strike me as being fairly typical AS characteristics.

Does sound like AS, I recommend seeing a psychologist for an official diagnosis.

Op, try to get officially accessed because some w*kers would talk about you being a faker if not officially diagnosed.

Warsie, all of the things you added to Hector's list apply to a lot of NTs.

Make sure to see someone who specializes in autism spectrum "disorders." Otherwise, you could be setting yourself up for misdiagnosis. It's amazing how uninformed "professionals" can be.

More importantly, those characteristics don't apply to a lot of people with AS. I'm not sure how much I believe in the implications of being "left-brained", anyway. Neuroscience is a burgeoning field at the moment and I suspect there'll be a lot of revisions made.

I'm currently trying to get a diagnosis - and what I've found so far is that unless you are moderately autistic, with no social ability to communicate and understand anything that is said to you - also with exceptionally bad hygiene, unable to make any eye contact and completely unresponsive to any verbal imput - then you are not going to get a diagnosis for AS - even though what I have described is clearly autism and would have been picked up on during early childhood. Also you can't have ANY friends or acquaintences, or have ever been to a social event, or understand basic social rules like 'you ought to sit on a chair'.

This means that if you are an adult or adolescent and undiagnosed, or if you are reasonably high functioning then you will have to stuggle against hords of ignorant morons who will do their best to sabotage your attempt to get a diagnosis.

A sample of things my psychologist has said to me (all of which are false):

There is no point in a diagnosis (for anyone) because there is no treatment for AS.
There is no support for people with AS.
Having a diagnosis will only make you worse.
You are not emotional because your family must have not given you any imput as a child.
You just need to try harder.
Look at me in the eyes!

Also as a word of warning those hords of morons also tend to completely deny that anyone with AS can form coping strategies.
