Callista, you're a good sport! Maybe honesty is the best policy. Sleep deprivation makes you do crazy things and if you're rather unconventional anyway.... well, stuff happens!

I've told my two best friends the truth now; both of them are nowhere near "neurotypical" themselves, though neither of them have Asperger's. Consequently, neither, after the initial surprise, was very dismayed. The world needs more people like them.

I plan to wear hats in public, so as to avoid having to pay a fine for a dress code violation; and once my hair has grown out enough to look like I just got a buzz cut, people should assume I got my hair cut rather than shaving it all off. I expect to get the usual "I can't believe you did that to your hair", followed by my "Don't worry; it grows fast [It does; about 2.5 cm a month]".

Of course, the super glue story will still be my backup in case anyone notices.

I'd love to have a buzz cut.

You don't realise how much hair weighs until you get it cut off. The one time I had short hair I found it a real revelation! It's a very 'feel good' thing, nice light tingly sensation around the scalp.

Unfortunately I loathe hairdressers and couldn't cope with the regular visits needed to keep short hair looking neat, so I've had to let it grow back and I just cut it myself to keep it neat and wear it in a ponytail. Hair is such a hassle.

So you took a razor to it? That's cool! It'll start to itch soon, and scratching is not advised. Or maybe that is just something I experience. If it DOES start to itch, I put an odorless lotion on top (and when it got really bad, I took some Benadryl.) It didn't look pretty, but itches that never go away drive me absolutely insane, and it really helped. The best part of having shaved your head is that the hair that grows back is really soft and fuzzy, like puppy fur. And if you use Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo while it's really short, it stays soft. (But that could just be my head of hair.)

It did itch for about six hours. I heal quickly, though; and since itching is associated with pain, that probably means that whatever was causing the itching healed within those six hours. The more annoying part of the whole thing is that, apparently, one loses a lot of heat through the scalp, and this heat loss has increased, making my head feel cold.

It's actually starting to be fuzzy already.

Regarding hair and hairdressers: I have never had my hair professionally cut, and I probably never will. My usual haircut is about mid-ear-length, with bangs, tapered towards the back so it just touches the collar. I don't have any layers. It's feminine enough without having to be taken care of very much--shampoo, conditioner, and one or two brushings a day. Cutting my own hair is actually quite easy; I have been doing so since late high school. I really hate anyone else touching my hair, so it's a bonus for the poor hairdresser, too, as s/he would have to see me wince and squirm while having my hair done.

With a little bit of practice and a willingness to adopt a simple haircut, anyone can cut their own hair. A big mirror and a small, hand-held one are necessary, as is a big, very sharp pair of scissors (I use my cloth shears). At the beginning, it's best to cut the hair longer than one wants it to be, as that allows for mistakes. Even straight hair, as mine is, seems to be quite forgiving; small errors vanish once the hair is dry, and little bits that you missed can be cut off just while brushing your hair next morning. I usually have someone check the back of my hair to be sure it's even. It's always interesting to see the expression on someone's face when you reveal that you have just cut your own hair!

Can i see a picture? I bet you look cute ^_^.

I also bet that you shaved your head in desperation to try something different in an attempt to gain control over your life.

Indeed. You are probably correct, Nomaken.

I do not have a picture; my grandparents, who came to visit me yesterday, took pictures, but their camera is not instant. I used the super-glue story on them; my grandmother believed it, but my grandfather, who is quite perceptive, must have seen through it because he made mention of my eyebrows, which do not yet look normal. I think he just believes I did it on a whim, while at a party or perhaps to be rebellious; he mentioned a movie in which someone did exactly that, so he might have assumed I was the same. At any event, I am not a very good liar; nor do I like lying.

Yesterday was warm, so I didn't wear my cap; I got all sorts of reactions, from shock to envy of my "guts" (courage, not internal organs). My friends are used to my eccentricities, so they don't seem to care all that much; but I didn't sit with them at lunch yesterday--I had a lunch meeting with my German professor--so I'll talk to them today for more than a few seconds, for the first time since they saw my new haircut.

A week after first shaving my head, I have about three millimeters of hair, so that it looks like a buzz cut. This is technically within my school's dress code, which does not allow shaved heads but says nothing about very short hair. A Dean whom I know greeted me in the cafeteria; she didn't comment on the hair, so I assume, since her part of her responsibility is to keep order, that she didn't count it as being too short for dress code. I might not end up with more than a reprimand, even if I were to get in trouble.

A girl in my hall insisted on rubbing my head for luck. Thankfully I no longer flinch at physical contact (I did until about two years ago), or I might have attempted to punch her in the nose, or something equally violent!

I shall count this as a new experiment on the responses of people to the unexpected.

I have to admire your guts about this too, that you're copiong with this so well.

I could probably actually cut my own hair but a. I don't trust myself and b. I like getting my hair cut. I only get it cut twice a year now so it's not a major budgeting issue; I go to procuts or supercuts (I confuse the two) and spend ten minutes explaining what I want (I'm not very trusting, the cut I want is actually very simple); then they cut it in less than five. :) I did cut my mom's hair once on her request; just a striaght cut, and she said I did a good job.

Aw, no pics.

I thought it'd make an interesting-looking yet still cute couple if me with my neck length hair dated a girl with short or even no hair. But turns it's not the best idea to hold oneself to in rural Wisconsin :P

I just got a "shaved" haircut recently and it looks great. So far I don't remember any dress codes in my college..... :)
