From looking on the forums, it seems there are quite a few different kinds of meltdown.
I don't have meltdowns, but I'm interested in what they are and what they're like.
Can anyone enlighten ?

Well that's the funny thing - there are loads of objective descriptions of meltdown - but nothing much written from the POV of the meltee.
And I know what a tantrum looks like - but you can't really gauge a great deal from just watching.

If banging on a door that's frozen shut and you're having a hard time with it and yelling angrily at the top of your lungs counts as a meltdown, then yes, I had one.

Sometimes I have mini-meltdowns at work; towards the end of the day when I'm tired of trying to multi-task all day I get very irritable and my fake smile begins to wain/crumble. Its' then that I have to make a real effort to be polite to everyone, while the NT's find it easy/no effort required.

That's when I get reminded I'm different/more disfunctional...

Hope you're well,

I can relate more to shutdowns than meltdowns, i have them all the time, especially after work. I usually lie down on my side with a cushion covering my face. It helps me to keep out the light and to breath more easily.

Are meltdowns a requirement for AS? I can relate more to the shutdowns, but I always thought that was just from my depression.

That was a good description Gavin. I have had more meltdowns then I expected. I thought they were more to do with violent outbursts. I am the type that just stays locked in my room and avoids contact with other people. I have had a few shutdowns before. I would just curl up on the couch with my dog. One was during a break up.

no meltdowns are not a requirement. You can have shutdowns and that's possible
