Popular music is now so production-intensive that producers & DJs often gain celebrity or near-celebrity status. Just running a soundboard would be a kick for me
Yes, it's totally fun working sound and video editing equipment! I can remember as a kid, I always was curious about what was going on "up in the booth" during a concert or show...It's been a long-term infactuation of mine. All those lights, meters, buttons, knobs, etc. I picked up working with audiovisual equipment at an early age, as I wanted to know what *really* makes those concerts and TV shows so spectacular.
Many NT's probably remember events in their childhood like winning little-leauge championship or something. I remember when I was 10 years old, and a friend who worked at a local TV station let me shoot some video with the station's Expen$$ive Betacam camera, and then edit it in their control room...still got that footage! Another memorable moment was when the projectionist at the I-max theater let me come in the projection booth (it's actually below the theater in an IMAX dome) and thread up the machine.
Although it would be nice being up on stage, or in front the camera getting all the fame and notoriety, I know my place is at the other end of the camera or microphone, where it really happens! Besides, I don't know how I'd perform in front of an audience. I'd probably clam up and look totally stiff and lifeless! I can play keyboarded instruments, but when someone's in the room, I end up fumbling up. Nobody believes I can play because they only hear what I recorded!
