The compression is on, but there is a lot that could be done to make it faster. Dumping the CSS out of the header templates and into a CSS file would be a great move as all that would be cached for each reloaded page. That's been suggested and ignored... and if you read the list (and his reply) it's not the hosting or bandwidth that's costing all this money he's saying- it's the publicist??, the columnists (who, GroovyDruid the member??), and a lot of other stuff that's probably unnecessary. Also, the bugginess of the site and the problems come from phpNuke (pile of garbage) and not from phpBB, but that's more of an opinion than anything else.

And, k96822, what you're missing are all the posts that relate to the most recent WP scandal, quickly covered up, hence various avatars and comments...

Alex, the 15-20$ a day you make from the ads are more than enough to pay for the hosting, and the other things you've talked about (publicist, etc) are of questionable use to the community. I don't regret the donation I made, because my WP.net experience was well worth the amount I've donated. But I'm very disappointed that you haven't given clear, satisfactory answers when I asked where my money was going. :(

Fred54 is saying what 99% of us think, I'm sure. The very vocal few do not represent the majority. Not even Bill Clinton could make EVERYBODY happy, and he is an uber-NT with super-charged charisma!

I agree. And by the sounds of it Alex has to actually dig deep into his OWN pockets to keep this site running. I think it really sad that a few people find it necessary to attack him over money, well said Fred54.

ok, not being specific about anyone on here, but i think that it is a sad state of affairs when the members on a website attack the creater and accuse him of what can only be described as fraud, seeing as you are accusing him of using money for his own gain when it is DONATED to run the site.
I have been on the site for the better part of a year and have never had any cause for complaint, i have seen other sites flouder because they are not given the support they dearly need and really do not want to see this site go the same way.

people get upset when personal attacks are made on members but they seem to have no compulsion about making deeply hurtful remarks about the people who run this site.

just my personal opinion but i really don't think this is the way to solve anything

I agree. One way to settle this issue is to have everyone who supports Alex and his vision to just send even just a little bit -- like $5 -- via Paypal. That'll send the message real clear.
