Where do you do your food shopping, i.e. which chain (don't know the American supermarkets, but in the UK there are Tesco, ASDA, Sainsbury's, Morrison's)?

Do you shop where you do because you prefer one chain over another, rather than it just being the nearest supermarket?

I shop at a branch of Sainsbury's in Edinburgh. It's a very friendly store, which I like - despite it being massive! Being one of the largest stores run by Sainsbury's, it's also a bit like Walmart in the States, in that it sells a lot of non-food goods.

I'm a bit of a creature of habit (go figure!) so if I'm specifically going out to do grocery shopping I go to the same store every time. I'm not totally inflexible, though, and if I'm out and happen to be near a different grocery store and happen to think of something I desperately need then it's no big deal to pick it up even if it's not the same brand.

What really bugs me is when the stores decide to stop selling a product I like. The stuff they are carrying might be just as good but I still feel betrayed. Clothing is the worst because the styles change very fast and by the time I wear something out I can't even find something similar to replace it, let alone an identical copy.

I that! I have worn the same pair of shoes for three years, and now they are being changed to a different color, a dirty gray color. If I buy new shoes, I want them to look new, not worn out! It just bothers me...

As an American, I prefer Albertson's. If I have to get stuff elsewhere, I'll suffer through not knowing where anything is, but I won't enjoy it. Clothes I usually get mail-ordered because that way it's always the same, I never have to try anything on, and I don't have to do the whole "shopping" thing. I only like shopping for electronics, movies, books, and the occasional trip to the hardware store to get parts for lightsabers.

What are supermarkets like outside the U.S.? (That is probably a silly question, but oh well.) Is it just like anywhere else--a big box with aisles full of food, wonderful fluorescent lighting, and carts with squeaky wheels?

The Yarraville/Seddon area where I live in Melbourne doesn't actually have a lot of major supermarkets, rather just smaller, independent ones. There's also an organic grocery in Yarraville, although I can't really afford to get too much there they do have brands of tofu and tempeh that I particularly like. I try to get down to Victoria Market in the city on the weekend if I'm after affordable organic stuff.

Sentry. Because it's the only one in the city.

Borough Market near London Brige tube. It has the most amazing selection and the quality is the best I have found in London, almost always you can try before you buy and they often have suggestions on how to combine flavours.
If I can't go there then it's the local Sainsburys :|

Mostly go to ASDA-Walmart,opposite the Trafford Centre,it's got everything needed in there on 2 floors, and it's open 24 hours so it's convenient for going to late at night when it isn't crowded and filled with screaming kids.
I go with my sister and her boyfriend, they usually drive down there.

I used to do most of my shopping in Morrisons, cos I work there so it seems silly to go home and then go to another shop. Now I work nights (woohoo, no customers) and the shop isn't open yet when I finish, so I go to Tesco. This is good, because the quality and variety is very poor at Morrisons. Tesco is open 24 hours, so it's easy to find a time to go when it's quiet. I try to buy meat from a local butcher though, because I find supermarket meat quite poor.

I got to a Tesco Extra n ear me when I'm short of food. It's pretty close. The only problem with the place is that it's easy to walk /down/ the hill to get there. Carrying the shopping back up the hill where I live over is tiring.

That and I like to use the self service checkout because they are superior. WHICH usually do something odd like register 2 products or not register any at all!
The worst thing you could posibly do is relise you don't have enough money on one of those things... because you can't explain "I'll just not buy this...".

I like Tesco's or ASDA as they are fairly cheap and do good food. When I lived in Manchester it was the ASDA I went to as it was within walking distance from my flat so it was very handy and very cheap, a good combo for a then student.

I get my meat from a local butcher's and my fruit and vegetables from market stalls in the city. The rest I get (milk, bread, cereal, cookies etc.) from a general store in the neighborhood.

Tesco's are not cheap! and they cram their food full of salt

I tend to shop at the following places but for differnt products

Co-op (Co-operative)
Lidil (cheap and good value for money)
Morrisons (i like their make of Soya Milk and they have some good offers on meat at the moment)

Also can't beat the a traditional local grocers or butcher over the evil supermarkets

I do sometimes goto ASDA because its the closest 24/5 supermarket in the area but the only thing i get there usually is their vindaloo sauces :P

Tesco's I avoid, Sainsbury's i avoid,
