Why do NTs smile while talking at you?

My problem is that I smile at the wrong times such as when in conversation with someone about a serious issue.

Smile generally says: "I like what I see/hear/think/etc."
This is how it is meant to be used - you let the other people know that you like something. Or someone.

What I mean is that they stop midsentence, smile, and go back to talking. Its like the smile is part of their speech.
