Pleased to meet you, Kathleen. Are you Irish? I know many Irish with that name.

Coming-out in real life is not necessary though. You can get more done if you're not concerned about explaining it to NTs. Just tell them that your sunglasses help you see better, that chaotic noises give you a headache, etc (whatever they happen to question you about). They're free to then come to their own conclusion but, most likely they're not going to start thinking anything less of you. I have friends who spotted my mannerisms when they saw the film Napoleon Dynamite yet, they still liked me just the same as before.

It depends on who you "come out" to. I've told a few friends about it and might tell people at a job about it if I feel it would benefit me if they knew about it. There's really no reason to tell anyone else about it though.

I only told some of my friends I'm autistic. My parents informed most other people. I'd love to tell other people I'm an aspie, but it's hard.

I might bring it up to people if it comes up in casual conversation ... and I've been experimenting (with some success) with mentioning it to prospective employers in interviews. But in a positive way/the positive aspects of AS.

Otherwise, what do we do? Run up to someone and say, "Hi! I'm Autistic! How 'bout those Cowboys!"

Welcome to the home planet!

For me I often keep my AS to myself. I really see no reason to tell complete strangers about my AS when its likely that most people may not be informed about it. Fortunately those few people I do tell think that I don't appear autistic to them when I tell them of my AS. Over the past eight years since I was diagnosed I have learned how to appear "normal" whenever I go to work or go to a social event.

It is somewhat sad that it is necessary for us to keep our autism a secret and expend so much effort feigning neurotypicality.

So sadly true. I told my friends, and they were like, "Uhhh ok, cool, just keep that part of you over there when we hang out."

:sigh:

Anyway, congratulations Kathleen, and welcome to WrongPlanet! Don't stop loving yourself!
