ND or NT topic

What I mean by NT is that my brother has more in common with typical people. He socializes well, is long married, college educated, long employed, and many friends. He and my ADD sister used to bully me. She is NT as well. Two pots calling the kettle burnt.

I was diagnosed last year with Tourette syndrome, or 'Tourette syndrome with obsessive compulsive behaviour' to be precise. The OCB is virtually non-existant now though. It is mild and most of my tics are either invisible to others or controllable to a certain extent.

No, and I apologise to any genuine sufferers, but I do not have it. ;)

Oh, grow up. Sorry, but I am fed up with people perpetuating the myth or implying that everyone with Tourette syndrome has coprolalia. It occurs in a minority of cases.

I have occasional tics. They're nowhere near Tourette's, though. Maybe once or twice a month I'll end up randomly doing some odd movement or making a noise, without knowing why. It's definitely different from stimming; for me, stims are voluntary though often subconscious; tics almost surprise me. I can hardly even predict it; feels kinda like an impulse. Most common are shaking my head or making a coughing or barking noise. Anyway, it doesn't get in the way and it doesn't bug anybody, so there's no reason to worry about it.

i have it but it's so mild it's hardly worth mentioning. i used to have facial tics, i still have small vocal tics every once in a while but they're almost inaudible to anyone but myself. a doctor i was seeing about something else used to work in a centre for children with tourette's and she suggested i might have it. i fit the criteria but it's so little that i don't bother mentioning it

Hmmmm.....I´ve been wondering about Tourette´s , and after watching Greyhound´s video, I´m wondering even more...I have tics kind of like that guy in the video....I don´t do anything with my shoulders- (I don´t think), but I wrinkle my nose, wiggle my ears- (yes, I can do that)- sometimes I have blinking spells, I wiggle my toes and fingers pretty much constantly. Vocally, I don´t do any speaking, but I make a whistling noise in my throat....I do that A LOT. It´s really embarrassing, because nobody I know can make this whistling noise in their throat- (I tell kids I´m a bird-woman)- so when people hear it, they wonder about it and I have to explain it all. Another thing I do every now and then, and rather unconsciously, is clear my throat. I actually don´t know much about Tourette´s Syndrome, except I read it´s more common in girls. Is just tics and nothing else, or is there something else associated with it?

My normal doctor gave me a half-diagnosis. She didn't want to diagnose me with Tourette's, she figured when I go see the Psychologist for AS, then they can diagnose me. But she said, with my vocal and motor tics as bad as they are and having gone on for years, that I undoubtedly do have it.

I've never really thought I did before, but after reading these posts and that link I can remember a lot of times when I was younger when I did things that were considered tics.

This also caught my eye:

Quote:
The vocal tic symptoms may interfere with the smooth flow of speech and resemble a stammer, stutter or other speech irregularity. Often, but not always, vocal symptoms occur at points of linguistic transition, such as at the beginning of a sentence where there may be speech blocking at the initiation of speech or at phrase transitions. Patients suddenly may alter speech volume, slur a phrase, emphasize a word or assume an accent.

I do this a lot, so much that I hate talking to people.

Nope, no TS here. I only have stims.

oh one thing that was happening for a while but doesn't happen anymore (or at least it doesn't happen frequently enough to remember when the last one was) was that i would be talking and all of a sudden i would sort of lose my breath or something, it's hard to explain but i would just momentarily not be able to make sound and i'd have to restart the word. anyone know anything about that?

Yeah I have Tourette's. I'm a little younger than most people. I just started it recently and I have a few main tics. One of them is when I bang my shoulder against my head. I used to have a tic when my head jerked. The doctors said it would hurt me though so I switched over to that one. I also have a few other random tics. Not as important as that one really. My school has been great though, and they allow me to go out of the room when I tic so my classmates won't tease me. I sometimes vocal tic not that often though. I'm going to see a doctor about it soon, so I hope he will give me answers.

Yeah, I must say this bugs me too... Even when you do have coprolalia, there is so much more to the condition than cursing...

Interesting. I have a history with vocal tics, but this is totally new to me. I've never hard of that before.

I very often slur words but didn't so back when I was a kid. I wonder if the tics and the slurring are related.

Yes, like your voice sort of 'slips'? For me it happens very rarely, but when it does it's because I'm nervous or excited.

I think it's three times more common in boys.

It happens to me from time to time. I mispronounce a word, and it sounds like a drunk slur. I quickly try to pronounce it again and ignore that I made the mistake to begin with. I stutter a lot too. Thing is I don't even have to be nervous to do this. Sometimes I am. When I'm excited I barely can make sense of my words.
But then I also go blank in my mind in the middle of explaining something.
Is it worth going for a diagnosis to get some sort of treatment for it? I got asked to say a few words at my own photo exhibit but I just shook my head. Talking to a whole bunch of official people that day was bad enough.
