I got a phone call on my cell half an hour ago, it was someone saying he was a neighbor and had gotten the number from the superintendent of the building. He said I walk non-stop all day on heels and it's driving him crazy (it's not true because I'm never home during the day, plus the whole apartment has very thick carpeting, plus I don't own any shoes with heels due to my back problem). I offered to give him the phone number of the landlord to complain to him, but he refused. He yelled and yelled on the phone until I hang up, then came and tried to pull down my apt. door and threatened me if I didn't open the door. I didn't open, of course. I'm going to the police station tomorrow morning to report him. I know the police won't do anything, but at least if I'm attacked, they'll know where to look first. I tried contacting the superintendent but he's not returning my calls. The landlord hasn't called me back yet either.

Why would the superintendant know your phone number? This guy is creepy, and you should report him. I don't know if you have Tresspass notices where you live, but if you do you should get one. If he was trying to beat down your door you shouldn't have any trouble getting something so he by law has to leave you alone. Make it so he can be arrested just by being near you. That's what I would do. Be careful. He's wacked.

I can never understand what motivates people to behave in such a way. Even if someone was driving him nuts, by the sound of their high heels (or something else) why would someone be convinced that vulgar behaviour will get rid of the problem?

Sounds like he needs a 'Chill -Pill'.

The landlord tried to convince me not to report it to the police. I believe, though, that for a man to batter the door and yell demanding that a woman who lives alone open the door is more serious than just being "an angry person". If he does something worse in future, the first thing the police will hold against me is why I didn't report him the first time.

Uh, yeah. That's illegal. You've got a lunatic on your hands. It's not OK to just go around pulling down other people's doors(?) and threatening them, whether for acutal or imaginary (which is what this one sounds like) reasons. Inform the police (whether or not they listen). If you have the capability, keep some video and audio recording devices around. If he calls back, record what he says. If he shows up, record that. Create evidence against this guy. You've tried being rational and he is obviously not going to respond rationally.

I'm sorry you are having to deal with this garbage.

Thank you Acacia. I'll try to learn if I can record with my cell phone.

Wow, now I know how to record a phone conversation! Now if someone starts yelling and threatening me on the phone, I can tell them that I'm recording them and they'll stop.

Can you use a cell phone to record a room conversation too?

Immediately call the police. Immediately swear out a complaint. Immediately demand an order of protection. Immediately contact your Landlord and if you have a building manager or a management company they must be alerted. DO NOT WAIT!!

Make an example of this moron. Let the building know that they can think or feel anything they want, but they can not act any way they want.

I totally agree with you, holden. I contacted the landlord and the building manager, but they both insist and insist that I must not report the guy to the police. They're protecting the guy because he's their friend. I actually intend to report the guy so that the building manager alerts all neighbours that I may be an old lady living alone, but I'm no easy prey. He'll probably tell all the neighbors that I'm a crazy woman who calls the police for nothing, and that's what I want the neighbors to think.

I agree with your course of action so far. I'd also ask the police if it's even legal for the superintendent to be giving out your phone number like that. I would think that it's considered confidential information, especially since it's your cell phone.

It's not for the superintendent or the landlord to tell you who you can or cannot report to the Police. I'd also tell the Police how opposed they were to the matter being reported at all.

The superintendent should not have given your phone number to anyone.

Do you have access to a lawyer or any kind of community advocacy who could assist or represent you?

It sounds like a terrible experience. :(

The landlord told me that the guy is also from the building management, therefore he has access to all my details. Seems it's not the building manager that gave him my phone number. Now my problem is I wanted to be in excellent terms with my landlord and my building manager, and I worked hard at it, and now they both hate me for reporting their friend to the police. But what should I do...put up with the guy's attacks so I won't lose the esteem of the landlord and the bldg manager???? I wonder what an NT would do, because I have no clue - as usual.

Does your computer have a webcam/microphone?

If so, try using those to record an even is it is to occur again.

(edited due a comment written while I was in a bitter mood. Sorry. )

I'm not sure what to tell you to do, either. I've often thought that an "ask a NT" thread would be a really nice thing to have here on the forum.
