I am very sensitive to physiological changes and as such cannot take anything without it making me feel anxious...

I have Lorazepam (Ativan) but I don't like it at all.

To manage the adrenalin when I am at home, I accept/ignore it.

To manage the adrenalin when I am in public, I accept/ignore it.

Does it REALLY stop you from doing anything?

The way I look at it is, I am getting adrenalin rushes for free without having to risk my life by riding a surf board up a wave the size of a house.

I seriously mistrust laboratory pharmaceuticals. They seem to actually make a lot of people worse in the long run.

Chamomile tea, when brewed very strong (like four teabags at a time per cup - almost a thin syrup), is very calming and lasts about four hours. No side effects, no addictive qualities. Tastes like wet grass. I've heard it compared to Xanax, but never having taken Xanax, I couldn't say for sure. I'd say it's as relaxing as cannabis, without the brain-numbing effects. Won't affect your ability to drive. Might make you so mellow you'll drive past your exit.

Risperdal, but it is being used for other things as well. I can't take anti-anxiety medication.

Hibiscus tea lowers blood pressure to the point it can make you almost unconscious. It might help some people because you can't have anxiety if you drop into a deep sleep. :) (I was drinking a hibiscus tea at work and fell over 6 times in on day till I figured out what was causing it and did some research.)

i USED to take heroin, methadone, benzodiazepams such as valium, rohypnol and serepax, as well as alcohol.
then I got clean and took SSRI's, which i think dumbed me down into a f*****g pigshit life that was all about mainstreaming as opposed to mainlining.

Now i take zilch and go and see a cool autism specialist who is teaching me to manage my anxiety WITHOUT chemicals.
I therefore take:

exercise
diaphragmatic breathing
use ipod to reduce auditory input
use hat and sunglasses to reduce visual input.
monitor myself for signs of overwhelm etc.

this is how i like to do it. But each to their own.
whatever gets you through i suppose.

Anyone had experience with Klonopin? How about Prazosin? My therapist is trying to force me on that one to treat nightmares.

Xanax, three times a day. It's worked miracles for me. I'm nowhere near as anxiety-ridden as I used to be.

I also take Lexapro for OCD and Risperdal for "bad thoughts".

Have any of you pill poppers (jokes) ever even tried Cannabis recreationally?

In my opinion there is no better medication than Cannabis for anxiety unless you want to numb your senses any stead of understanding them.

I've never smoked pot. Pot is illegal by the way. I saw an article recently by Dr. Sanjay Gupta on the physical harm pot causes. Its not safe. Pills aren't safe either but pot is even more dangerous. People that consume either one without concern are stupid fools.

And by the way you keep bringing up that you smoke pot on here I'd say you are soliciting for buyers. It lowers you even more on the human scum scale that you would be trying to sell pot on a site frequented by so many children. Maybe there's someone policing the site tonight who will trace your IP and bust your worthless a$$.

I am 46 as well and do roughly the same. I have found I can control the amount of overload I experience with diet and exercise. I am currently doing a detox and have noticed that irritable bowel is coming back as is a feeling of general unease.

The only difference between my regular diet and my detox diet is that I eat a lot of 85% or stronger chocolate.

I am thinking that the endorphines from the chocolate may be essential to my functioning - it might be sugar withdrawal though.

That is the funniest post I have read on here. You are so AS. The person you are attacking has only ever posted 7 times LOL and at least their post was useful!

I WANT my kids to read about drugs because 99% of the people who have actually done them will have a much more balanced view.

I imagine most people who have stopped would be unlikely to advocate drugs either. They stopped for a reason and whatever reason that is, is what I want my kids to hear.

I am pleased it works for you. However I totally disagree. Like many people with AS, cannabis will actually have a paradoxical effect on me. I get very hyper. In fact it would be true to say in social settings it triggers panic attacks. If I am on my own my rational mind goes out the window and I become very introspective and hyper-sensitive to light, physical sensations and sounds.

There is no way I could sleep if I smoked some.

Problem with all these things is that theymake me focus inward and the key to me not being anxious is to focus outwards and take my mind away from how I feel.


I tried oxytocin and that was awful. To be honest if I take meds, I am always checkingup on myself and the focus becomes "am I anxious" and then of course, I will be.

I might try chamomile tea though - that sounds like a good idea.

Yes. It was the first medication I tried that eliminated my panic attacks. But I only take it when I absolutely have to, because it makes me very, very tired and "out of it." That's a good thing when I'm totally and completely freaking out, but not so good on a day-to-day basis.

I'm diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety and Social Phobia.
So, in other words, I'm anxious all the time, and get increasingly panicked when around people. Fantastic :roll:

When first diagnosed 8 years ago, I was prescribed Paxil. I did notice some reductions in random OCD symptoms, but no real impact on the anxiety. The side effects were unpleasant, and I stopped using it. Using cannabis just increased the anxiety and panic. Alcohol is effective at reducing anxiety and making me more social, but tends to also make me sleepy and "stupid".

I've tried a number of herbal remedies as well. Chamomile and Valerian seem to help, but I've never used them consistently enough, I think. I'll have to try that super-concentrated chamomile idea.

Like millie, I've found that using an mp3 player and sunglasses to reduce sensory input is extremely helpful. Problem is, the use of these items is not compatible with my work environment, and is often difficult to pull off even at home with the other people that live there.

I need to get into better exercise habits, because I know that would help immensely.
Also, I'm trying to modify my diet to include only simple, whole foods. I want to make it so that Fruits/Vegetables/Nuts are the majority of what I eat. Something that comes closer to matching how human digestive systems evolved.
