I was wondering how common this is for aspies. I rock back and forth with my legs crossed, usually to music. I'm not diagnosed, but I believe this is one of the bigger tip offs to myself that I have AS. I usually do this daily and get really antsy if I go a day or longer without the opportunity to rock, similar to how I understand going too long without a cigarette is for smokers. I find this is the only way to calm myself down when I feel upset especially, but also when I feel particularily happy or excited. I always justified this when I was younger as "I'll grow out of this", but I'm 21 and I still feel the need to do it.

When I stop and think about the action itself, I feel very ashamed and embarrassed. I guess I just wanted to know if there are other people here like this?

I used to rock back and forth when I was a little kid, but I don't really do it any more. I do lots of other kinds of stimming such as playing with my pen at school, or tapping my feet against the floor really fast. I also like to stare at my ceiling fan while its running. lol

I rock side to side and even spin in circles in public when waiting. At home, I stim by twirling my hair and even holding my hair up to my nose and smelling it. I know it's weird, but it comforts me.

Up until really recently, I believed that rocking was one thing that I did not do.

However, I realised once whilst in a university tutorial that I was rocking back-and-forth as I was speaking. This led me to closer observe my movements whilst in public. I discovered that, in fact, I actually rock quite often and also that I'm almost always stimming in some way. I still do not understand how I could have been unaware of this.

Oh well, that ended my belief that I was really good at regulating my physical behaviour and appearing 'normal'.

however

my little sister, shes 9, decided to immitate me during some game-night at my dads place, and she immitated all my "stims" rocking, stepping around, drumming on my thighs, all of them

and they all guessed me :(

she showed me afterwards, cus i wasnt there, i was all "ahaaaaaaaaa, yes yes, spot on, very cute, stop it.. " :D :(

That describes me exactly! I was like that until I was in my 40s, when I went on Prozac. Then the need suddenly stopped and never came back, even after I quit taking the Prozac.

I'm sorry you find it embarrasing - I never did. That must be hard, to need to do something but be ashamed of it at the same time.

I find that I will either rock to music, or to my own pulse, although I don't rock that often.

I rock a lot. I rock forward and backwards, sometimes side to side. It just makes me feel less stressed, but some NTs get confused and think it is a sign of stress! They're all saying 'what's wrong?' and I'm just thinking, 'go away and leave me be!'

I tend to sit and rock when upset; I sway while standing if I am happy. I've learned to translate some of the urges into percussion over the years, so at least when I am hit with the need it is something more readily and easily explained instead of requiring a detailed explanation of compulsion. It has never ceased to amaze me what one gets away with when the words "I'm a drummer" are uttered... even though I'm fickle and prefer percussionist. Yes, am strange.

Damo (6years) rocks when he is upset or just for no apparent reason at all. When he is very upset he asks for 'rocky cuddles' when I hold him tight and rock him. It can take as little as a minute for him to go from screaming to calm when he gets his 'rocky cuddles'.

I rock back and forth (I rarely rock side to side) when I'm tired, bored, or upset. I rock really vigorously when I'm upset, and it's usually coupled with another stim: holding my hands over my ears. I rock mildly when I'm tired. I don't even realize I do it. It's just a natural reaction for me.

Rocking is extremely common. i rock all the time---even in chairs that are not made to rock. I have 9 rocking chairs in my house. It is very soothing to me.

Yes, to music that I'm really into (has to have a certain beat or groove). I find it very easy to trance out as well, often at the same time.

I always rock myself to sleep.

I also rock in other situations - when I'm bored or need comfort. When I was a child I really hated visiting some relatives of ours, but I could handle them if I was allowed to sit in the rocking chair with their cat on my lap (this didn't mean I would actually talk to any of them  )
