My body is young, but my mind is old.

And I don't think kids are throwing around the word "hip" anymore. If someone asked me if I was "hip", I would think that they were asking if I was someone's femur or upper thigh.

And you haven't dropped dead from exhaustion?

When I was late teens/ early 20s I felt so old... everyone else seemed to enjoy going out and having fun, but even if I had a chance to go out myself I never enjoyed myself and just wanted to crawl under a rock. Once in a while I went out alone to a club, and never talked to anyone, that was somewhat enjoyable.

It is strange for me to see my children growing up a bit and ENJOYING parties and such. I don't understand it!!

Sometimes I feel a bit of regret because when I see people of any age having fun socializing and partying I know I will never be part of anything like that.

Most of the peers I hang out with aren't necessarily the "hippest" types: they're more so artsy and into ideas. They're a definite mix, though: I have friends that like to drink and get stoned all the time, and I have others whose idea of fun is a philisophical discusion or a movie night in. I seem to fit in with both crowds though, which is weird for an Aspie. Mind you, I didn't have any friends at all 3-4 years ago.

The fun part about it is I can pick and choose them based on my mood. Sometimes I like to drink, party and goof off, but other times I like sitting and talking over a coffee or tea.

I'm hip, yet in my own way. To me, that's the hippest thing of all.

I am keenly knowledgeable about the latest trends or developments in very few arenas, but those about which I am aware, is very keenly Isn't that AS??!

When I was young, it was important for a while for me to be hip, but I don't think I convinced anybody but myself that I qualified. After the Beatles I lost interest in mainstream fashion (so did the Beatles!), and turned to fringe cultures a lot more, where trivial signs of conformity tend not to be so important. Also I had a stronger empathy with old people than a lot of the straight teenagers did, and a lot of conservational feelings that modernising was often taking the word in a harmful direction. I loathed middle-aged people for years, no doubt because of the damage that generation had done to me via teaching and parenting imstakes. But slowly it all diffused away as I grew up.

I still held onto a strong feeling of youthful arrogance for decades, kind of unconsciously feeling that I was somehow still part of an elite few who had life properly sussed out while most people were still kind of undeveloped and slaves to convention and futile mainstream paradigms.

It's still there in a way, but (hopefully) only because my ways make more sense to me than most other people's ways (otherwise why would I want to stay the way I am?) - generally I acknowledge that other people may have made the right life choices for themselves, though I still harbour a strong suspicion that a lot of them may be following unworkable philosophies. I don't judge in the individual case though. Ultimately the whole "hip" thing is an elitist fallacy, which needs "squares" or "nerds" to laugh at or demonise, so in the end it can't possibly work, once you notice that to invalidate the identities of others doesn't validate your own identity, the whole thing collapses.

My generation disgusts and confuses me for the most part. Though I'd be saying that no matter what generation I belonged to - Young people are intolerable as a rule. They take care to appear like rebels, but in actuality they are closet conformists.

I'm young and square. To hell with being cool.
