I know, due to my clumsiness and poor motor coordination, I have probably broken thousands and thousands of dollars worth of stuff over my lifetime (it makes me wince just to think of it). Can anyone relate to that horrible sinking feeling you get in your stomach when your elbow knocks over and smashes that priceless family heirloom that you were sure was at least 1m to your left hand side?

I chose once a month. I have a habit of breaking pegs and then swear loudly because we're running out. And we buy more clothes than pegs. Not really priceless heirlooms though.
I remember once I hit a cd against my head and it broke. This was before I knew about AS. And my sister said something along the lines of 'you're ret*d.'
I've broken ceramic things and when I broke my father's binoculars he shouted at me as though I broke a precious heirloom.

I'm the opposite. Most of my stuff is immaculate.

I do both (break and fix).

Just to be totally clear, I don't break things on purpose.

Does anyone else have this problem? Where their poor motor coordination causes them to misjudge angles etc and break things? When I'm not breaking things I'm banging into things and bruising myself.

Apart for some not so obvious coordination problems, I have issues with judging or maybe I should say misjudging distance. I've learned over the years to be very careful, but it still happens to bump in to things or drop them. And yes, it annoys me

I admit when I am having a meltdown I throw things around. Then I feel like such a fool afterwards. Ugh.

I've probably broken my toe lots of times walking into things.

I break things far too often, so I surround myself with things that are really hard to break. I don't use glass or anything breakable unless I have to. (Yay plastic plates and cups! Besides, water tastes better from plastic cups.) But I also tend to break... me... I accumulate bruises from tripping over things or wacking things or walking into things that I was sure were many feet away. It's very frustrating. I'm the only person I know to break a bone in my foot while seated. (My foot hit the table support and cracked...)

On second thought, I also like to fix things and will not buy new things until I've completely exhausted my ability to fix it.

I can't fix things. I have no mechanical ability whatsoever. Changing a lightbulb is the best I can do - incandescent only.

I chose once a week - either a thing or myself. I have twisted my ankle while wearing tennis shoes or flats - I will wear high heels maybe once or twice a year (high = 1"!).

I pretty much use all plain white plates and mismatched cereal bowls so that I can replace them and not worry about having a perfect "set". I probably break at least one glass or plate per month. My electronics have all been dropped and sometimes shattered (except for my camera thank goodness).

And I always have at least one bruise from running into things.

Yeah I'm always breaking things, because I'm clumsy and heavy handed, and also I ahve a habit of fiddling with and bending everything I see, so it just snaps in my hand. I can't tell you how many pen lids I've broke, and they're not always mine either.
And I bump into things and people, not as often as I used to though.

If I remember correctly, both Chuck and Sedaka found that martial arts training improved their coordination. I am sure anything will work that needs coordination, that you enjoy enough to keep doing, and that allows you to go gradually from easy to more difficult things. Dancing, gymnastics, acrobatics, juggling. Oh. I just saw Izzy_Dolphin breaks things, and she practices circus arts. Perhaps it's not so effective? :chin:

If it is really as much as 1m, I am not sure that is poor motor skills. Might be more to do with spatial awareness. To practice that you would do other things. Are you sitting down? Take a deep, calming breath. Team sports. That's what comes to mind. If I think of something else, I'll tell you. But now excuse me while I wash my mouth out with soap. Team sports! :eew:

I don't think that is the same as coordination. You'd have a purely motoric problem if you knew where things are, but your motor commands are too variable. If you don't know where things are that means either you get the distance wrong or you quickly lose track.

Yep, I get the distance wrong - I generally have a very vague perception of distance: 100m or 200m will be perceived pretty much as the same. Especially when tired I can easily misjudge the position of an object and not quite manage to grab the damn thing. A bit like drunks do

I know it's not the same as coordination - I see it as a bonus on top of that!

My hand-eye coordination is actually pretty amazing, it's one of things that is completely unaffected by autism for me.

That doesn't mean i don't break things, i always "play" with stuff when i'm around friends house's. I've broken computers, computer games, chairs, toasters... the list is endless. Infact, i'm not allowed to touch certain things in certain friend's houses anymore.

I also don't get a sinking feeling, i always offer to pay for what i've broke, it is the simple solution after all. If people don't take me up on it, that's their problem.
