The only thing that I can think of for me like this is that whenever I sit down, I almost always want to sit on my lower legs. Other people have tried it and they consider it to be extremely painful. I don't see what they're really complaining about though. It's just this need I have. There's really no other word for it. My mom is constantly telling me to stop sitting like this, but trust me, it's too hard to quit. I even sit like this without even realizing it for three hours sometimes. I don't know, it's really weird.

That's exactly how I sit! :D

crossing your legs and sitting indian style - so do we all do that? amazing the things you never would have connected to AS

I'm 34, and still prefer to sit on my folded legs, or in some other tight, balled up position. I tend to do this in proportion to how skinny I am. I imagine I'll still be doing this when I'm 70. Sitting on my ass with my feet on the floor just feels less relaxing.

As the original poster said, I also fidget with things or with my fingers, bump into doorways, stroke my legs, head, and arms periodically, and sleep in seemingly awkward positions. I also dislike clothing that's too loose or baggy, feeling/having fat, and being naked.

All I really have to say, however, is that "proprioception", is a really cool word that I'd never heard before. Hehe. :D

Yes, whoever came up with the word was trying to play "cool" in English, lol. As it is simply an spanglish kind of made up word.
Propio in Spanish, (obviously coming from latin root), means Own, or Self. So he just mixed the spanish word with perception---"propioception", might sound cool in English but it does sound stupid in Spanish indeed, lol.
It would have been the same and more accurate if it was just either in english or in spanish: "Selfperception" or "Percepción-Propia"

I have several problems in this area .
I have broken my wrists several times going through doorways . Ive often missed the table when putting cups down . The water from the kettle misses the cup . I break glasses on the sink taps . I crash my hand into the rim of the washing machine when i reach into get clothes out.
i always wobble going through doorways, i cant walk straight . I always have to have one part of my body touching another, i can absolutely not have it any other way. I cant sit without moving always crossing uncrossing legs , putting feet on the base of the desk chin on hand etc .
i also have to touch things to walk past them , i feel very uncomfortable walking through narrow spaces , things seem to move nearer and further away as i walk past them.
i always thought these things were visual problems not proprioception.

Wow! This is a great thread! :D

Reading these posts is almost spooky; it describes over and over again how I tend to sit, move, what kind of physical difficulties/complications I experience, and sleeping positions, etc etc etc.

On page 2 someone mentions that "proprioception is a function of the parietal lobe in the brain, which receives and interprets pain, temperature, touch, size, shape, and body part awareness, aswell as participating in hearing, reasoning and memory". Is that right?

Must go read about the parietal lobe, and whether opioids, ( specifically food opioids ), have any effect on it!
.

Yeah, most days I feel like I zipped my body on that morning but must have selected the wrong size. I have never felt "at home" in my body. I used to give myself little ahead-of-time prompts for things like parties or even school...If the chair has arms, this is where I'll put one arm and here's where I'll put the other...if I'm on a bench...here's what I'll do with my legs...if I'm standing up, here's the position I'll be in.

And sometimes while I'm walking I'm not sure what my hands are doing and I feel like I'm swinging them too far and they're...all over the place.

i don't like walking side by side with people because i have to pay very close attention not to keep colliding with them. i don't seem to have much in the way of peripheral vision either, or much of a sense of when someone is behind me. (i didn't know this was abnormal--i mean, how do you know if someone's behind you or not? but someone pointed out to me that it was unusual.)

Proprioception or lack of it seem to contribute greatly to my poor motor coordination.

Trying to keep body and mind together topic

Most times I am not aware of my body, just my mind, and it feels as if my body parts are just extensions of my thinking, so they do not "feel real". There is a disconnect, or schism, between my body and mind. ( There is a whole philosophy about this!) There is supposed to be a mediating awareness between them so that both can work together. Alas, this is not the case, for me.. Dyspraxia is the result. :(

So I do have problems with proprioception.

Glad to see a nearly 5 year old thread revived.

Proprioception is the sense of the position of parts of the body. (Here is a link to info on Wikipedia.) I have read that some people with Asperger's Syndrome have weak proprioception, that is, have problems with feeling their body parts, especially limbs. This idea seemed very weird to me at first, but when I started to think about it more, I realized that...
1. I often have a horrifying feeling at night that one of my legs is missing. I try to move a foot - ah, there it is!
2. I like to sit on my hands, and cross-legged (keeping legs on the chair).
3. I like very much crossing my legs and arms (and was actually unaware, until very recently, what meaning the latter conveyed).
4. If I do not cross my legs while sitting at the desk, I like to keep them in such a way that they touch the desk, chair or each other in as many points as possible.
5. I often touch my legs, seemingly without reason.
6. When in bed, I often assume a very strange position, with legs and arms tangled.
7. I like keeping objects in my hands (pens, mugs, etc.).
8. Finally, I often accidentally hit walls, door frames, furniture etc. with my hands when walking inside a building. My watch is all scratched because of this. I also bump into these obstacles often.

Of course, none of the above is really a problem. I can touch my nose with eyes closed (people with proprioception impairments often have problem with this test). But I suspect that my body awareness is somewhat weaker than normal. What about you?

I do all of these things and so does my bf. My friend Victoria laughs at our mutual lack of cordination walking around. We usualy end up getting tangled in one another when sitting together. Today I was walking down my hallway that has only been the same for 9+ years and ended up with my body halfway wraped around the corner I was not even trying to turn into that room. And now my mom thinks it is funny to have things jutting from the walls at forehead heigth. Sometime I forget that parts of my body exist or are attached to me, this become kind of wierd and aqward being that I have a larger than average "cheast-area." So at least once a day one of my friends will say "Errrmm... your breast are on me, please take a step backward"

yes. Weaker than normal. My lower body is often covered in bruises from banging into things.
I bump into things a lot. My upper body is agile. My lower feels clumsy.

Mild in my case. I'll occasionally run into a table or counter or bang a doorframe with my hand or hip. Sometimes, I run into people, too, while walking but I think that's more related to not being able to judge their movements well. I also catch myself rapping a knuckle against the wall as I pass through a hallway. I'm another who sleeps in fetal position.

Regards,

Patricia

Yeah. I sometimes do stupid things. I don't 'lose' body parts but I can't tell fine differences in distance. The other day I was eating lettuce (I eat it in big chunks just plain and raw) and I was munching rabbit style really fast and bit my fingers. I was like "How the heck did they get that close to my teeth?" xD

I just realized how many times I make a fool of myself in a day.

Also I will run my side into door frames.
