i know this is a stim but was wondering if this was that hair-pulling disorder (starts with T)? ive done it since i was a kid. basically when i do it i look as if im mentally ret*d because my left eye (a lazy eye) goes to the side. i feel comfortable when i do it. also i use to fantasize about eating my hair. i dunno why. i dont pull out my hair just twirl in circles and eventually some of it snaps out. i twirl many different ways. i even do this thing after its all notted up where i slide my fingernails down it and straighten it out. i've kinda grown out of it and replaced it with smoking (which sucks). i started doing it again today and my need for a cigarette dissapears.

but anyway... is this a hair-pulling disorder someway i could take medication where i dont feel tense because im not twirling or doing a stim? or is this just another sympton of aspergers.

i know which disorder you mean, although i forgot its name... but sufferers of that will pull there hair out on purpose in pieces

thinking about it now i recken an old work colleague of mine had AS. though i changed jobs now.
he was always twirling his hair, and ive never before seen anyomne do it, and for sucha long period of time. it used to get on my nerves cos hed do it on the bus to and from work and id have to sit behind him cos we all had allocated seats. and all hed do is that.
he was also a very gumpy man, and used to push himself around at work and not consider anybodies feelings or care whether he annoyed people.
i lost it with him once about the hair twirling becuase i couldent stand it.

I found that I do the same thing, when I'm not smoking as well. I always figured it was just a normal nervous habit. I never actually pulled pieces out though, just played with it a bit.

Twirling hair is a symptom of excitability. I had it for a long timt since I was a kid. And I am NT but with other problems than you, that's to say maniaco-depressive disease.

It was a time, in depressed moments I almost had no hair rested !..and I had to cut it ! !

Now than I do feel really better, sice a few years (with medications ++), I do avoid to touch my hair..and it's not difficult. All'right.

I am a hair puller, too. The hair pulling got so bad that I have picked bald patches into my head a couple of times. I find that when I wear my hair down, I am most tempted to pull my hair out. I'm less likely to pull it when I wear it up. So I wear my hair up most of the time.

The disorder is called trichotillomania (I'm not sure if that's the correct spelling though), and I had for quite a while. I don't know of any medication for it, but you could probably find information online. You could try finding other stims instead, although I'm afraid the only ones I seem to switch between are self-destructive in some way. Still, now that I have an MP3 player I use music for stimming, which helps a lot, and sitting on my hands also helps when I feel the need to do something like that, which both stops the movements of these stims, and creates pressure on my hands, which also helps me feel less stressed. Anyway, I hope this helps, and as I said before, if you look online you could probably find some more info. :) Just play about with the spelling a bit if this isn't correct, and you should find something. :)

I like to twirl my hair and sometimes chew on the ends of it. I was really annoyed when certain body language experts said that hair twirling was a courtship gesture (ie female twirling hair indicates interest in guy she is talking to) - except I do it when I'm not with anyone. Nice to know it's just a stim - not so good to know it is frequently misunderstood. I don't pull my hair out.

I also used to suck my thumb, that kind of got replaced by a tooth straightening plate - which I could suck on instead. Eventually I didn't need to suck on anything but it took ages - I think I was 10, got teased a lot about it.

I also like to do the leg jiggling thing. But I can sit still when I have to.

I've had this for quite a while. Music seems to calm me down as well.

I used to pull my hair out a lot from about ages 9-11, and still do it to a lesser degree now. I also twirl my hair as a stim, but I'm trying to stop because I think it's damaging my hair.

Eyelash pulling is a common habit of mine. May be an extension on my tourettes because I also get some uncontrollable tics in my face as well as my hands. My nose sometimes also twitches occasionally like a rabbit's and I have an urge to reach up and pick it from time to time, but I have managed with great difficulty to divert that habit to pulling at other parts of my face like my eyelashes.
The eyelashes are all still there so I do not look on that as much of a problem.

Hair pulling was the enemy of my once long brown lush locks too :( .
I liked the sensation it created when each strand was pulled from my scalp. Not only pulling though, I used to twist a few strands around until they formed a knot and then I used to break off the knot with my fingers. I decided that enough was enough and I got my hair cut short last year.
Now I'm gonna grow my hair back to its former glory :P

Have you tried sucking on something else - like a biro? Or the arms of spectacles (though that can be misunderstood - like twirling hair). Just find something else non toxic to put in your mouth when you would normally have a smoke. For some people, chewing gum works.

Nicotine is very addictive however, you may find you need it for more than just habit or stimming.

Last time I tried to quit smoking I almost had it but the withdrawls were so bad. I couldn't sleep and I had to work next day so I smoked one to go to sleep.
