I prefer going back and fifth, myself. Or tossing back a "fifth". But seriously, though, don't you feel there is some cosmic force out there (Flying Spaghetti Monster?) that ensures that any rant about spelling must always include at least one misspelled word?

Don't rely too much on much-vaunted spell-checkers. You might "loose" your mind ;)

Yes.. and words with the phonetic sound of "four" in them are a problem of mine. I also cannot spell forty correctly. I didn't know until like last year that forty does not have a U in it. Maybe if I could find a good grammar checker it'd help. I've been pawing through Firefox add-ons, haven't come across one yet. Found some other cool plug-ins, though. Anybody know of a good grammar checker for Firefox?

I understand that spelling is one of those things that some people just "get", naturally and easily, and for some people it's a real challenge. I've always been able to spell effortlessly (though I do make mistakes), but I can't drive a car with manual transmission to save my life. It's a mystery to me how people can learn that. So...everyone's got their thing.

Yes, but while they're obviously not perfect (reference my "fourth" mistake, lol) spellcheckers do kinda help with most of it.

And I don't understand why some people write "dis and dat" instead of "this and that" (are those basic, 1st-grade-level words really that hard to master?), and yet otherwise seem to be able to write a fairly good sentence. I assume it's more of an affectation than a misspelling.

Yes. Although I sometimes use smashed-together words to make the tone different. Maybe that ends up looking stupid to other people, I'm not sure. Like when I say "'Zactly!" or "Yanno.."

ALL CAPS makes my brain spin, and I won't read it at all. It's too much work, and it's something the writer has full control over. When someone types in all caps, they are saying, "I don't have much respect for you, the reader, and I'm going to make you work extra hard to figure out what I'm trying to say."

The all caps thing is yelling. I use caps for things I want to emphasize. It's kinda like putting it in bold or italics.. but not quite. It's a type of emphasis, it's silly to write everything like that, then nothing is actually emphasized. What's the point of that?

I'm the same. Poor spelling makes things difficult for me to understand, but if I can see that there's a genuine reason for it, I'm not going to get too worked up about it.

I get that some things are unavoidable, but on a computer, it doesn't matter if you can't naturally spell well, the computer tells you.

The computer tells you a list of possible words or sometimes the computer will just insert a completely incorrect word, because it decides only that one word was close enough. This can actually have the opposite effect of making people's writing harder to understand. Spell checkers only really work for people who can spell who make the odd mistake in their typing (Ironic, isn't it?).

I'm not saying that it's infallible, just that it's helpful. A lot of commonly misspelled words will be recognized at least to the extent that you can choose them from a list, and there are a lot of people who can't spell, but can recognize correct spelling. A lot of words that the spellchecker doesn't find the correct spelling for can be found with Google, too, I've noticed. My spellchecker doesn't recognize trichotillomania, but if I Google it I can find it. Actually.. *adds the correct spelling of that to spell-checker's dictionary* Now it can! lol

and let it be known that bad spelling is not an indicator of intelligence. I had a linguistics professor in college who was dyslexic and spelled scissors as sizzers but she was fascinating and brilliant. By the same token, just because someone has a hick accent doesn't mean they are stupid (or sleep with their cousin).

I tend to hate mispellings and grammar, especially if someone doesn't use punctuations. Can't they get a spellcheck or something :?:  :wall:

Grammar and spelling are not the same. Spelling is like using the right kind of bricks, grammar is more like the plan for the verbal structure you are creating. Do they still do sentence diagramming in school any more?

In my line of work I have had to get used to deciphering some rather atrocious spelling and handwriting over the years. I have gotten used to dealing with it, although I still can't stand it when I make my own errors. My biggest peeve is ***APOSTROPHE ABUSE***. If you're not sure whether to put it in, for God's sake, leave it out! Also, there's misused quotation marks. Jeesh!

So don't go with your "wife" to buy ladie's jean's to wear when you visit the Quayle's.

And I understand why there is such a tendency not to capitalize online. Everywhere you go, there it is. Not even my siblings are immune. But it drives me frickin' nuts!

how r u?
I hate that.. Abbreviated words, why? You save yourself a couple of letters but pretty much encode it for the next person. I have more problems with abb. words more than anything. You would never catch me doing such a thing - ever.

I blame Internet Explorer for being so basic, it's weak. There is no spell checking function in there at all. So people get away with writing/typing "Should of," "Must of" - it's HAVE... "Must've" doesn't make "Must'f" damn it!!

I prefer badly written hand writing, you can tell a lot from it. You could probably also understand the way they speak and grasp the English language and how they see it. Well, I do anyway

Once in a while I make the odd spelling error. I can spell pretty good most of the time.I am going to be a second year legal assistant student this fall...I did my first year of the 2 year college course.Spelling is something legal assistants have to be really good at, along with proofreading for spelling and grammar.I read the forum here and find alot of errors but end up biting my tongue and not saying anything because I don't want to seem like an arse and just tell myself to relax since this is people posting on a forum and not people drafting legal documents. In the legal field, they are picky about spelling and grammar, so in college, they trained us how to be picky.I will try my best to save my pickiness for the law office or the court house.

Ah I can't stand bad spellers, if it's 1 typo/error I don't mind or if someone shortens the odd word on MSN I don't mind as much. But when someone carries on mispelling everything I have got to say something. I have a friend that can't spell at all and once spelled einstein "hiynstin" and origional "orijanel". And even the simple words she completely butchers or has to ask me how to spell it. She once asked me to spell the word "mick" as in taking the mick (she thought it was mik at first) and when I said m i c k she said "how come?" and I said "because the origional phrase is 'taking the Michael" and short for that is 'taking the micky' so the even shorter one must be 'mick'." So she then said I am a dictionary ,she surprisingly spelled that right. I don't see how I'm a dictionary just because I know how to spell a word 5 year olds can spell. And she typed a letter to her friend once (they were going to through dramas) and sent the file to me so I can give her my opinion (she always wants to know my opinion on things for some reason). And the thing that stood out 100 times more than the letter itself was the spelling and grammar or lack there of. Here are some examples of her lovely spelling:
"lesion"-Listen
"meight"-mate
"shore"-sure. That could of been the right spelling if she was on about the sea shore, but she wasn't.

Why oh why do people have just horrible spelling of such simple words??? True I'm not magnificant at spelling the longer words but atleast I have decent spelling. And according to my friend I am "hiynstin" as she calls it because I pick up on her spelling. But I can't read what she says half the time so what else am I supposed to do?
I've had to proofread this loads of times trying to avoid any typos. Because I would be a hypocrite otherwise.

I can tolerate spelling mistakes, but purposely spelling words wrong? I find it hard not to tell people they're idiots

My rule of thumb is that if something is posted in text-speak, all caps, or grievously ignores the rules of spelling and grammar, it's the same as if it was posted in Russian or Latin. Yes, I took Latin in high school and could probably figure out what they're saying eventually, but if they aren't going to respect my time enough to write in our common language, I'm going to assume it's because they don't think I need to read it.

What throws me into a rage I can barely contain is illiteracy in print: in a book, a magazine or a poster. This is where someone WHOSE JOB IT IS has BEEN PAID to write something, and neither he or she, nor his or her boss, nor the idiot who paid for it, has even noticed that the person paid to do the job CAN'T DO THE JOB!

It's a good thing I'm so relaxed about it.

An appalling example of something similar is what I read on the back of a mass-market paperback recently. The blurb set the scene with events in prehistory (or ancient history: I can't remember), then flashed forward to "early in the second millennium". No problem with that, until I realised, reading on, that what was meant was the present day - early, that is, in the THIRD millennium!

If a wall wasn't built correctly, it would fall down. If people don't write correctly, nobody seems to give a damn. And WE've got a communication disorder?

As one of the worst offenders please accept my heartfelt appologies. I am fully cognisent of my dificiencies in this area. I attribute this to the fact that I am, indeed, mildly lysdexic. I am also a MS IE user, and as a technical troglydite am quite ignorant of how to use spell check within the confines of this BBS. Another BBS I used to frequent had incorporated a spell check feature on the site, and once informed of this, I used it religiously. I can well sympathise with those of you who are pained by this failing on my part, as I have the same feeling with regard to facts. An inprecise fact HURTS! However, it does strike me as an unfair imposition on my time to expect me to devote an extrordinary amount of effort to manually proof read every post I make with either a dictionary or wikapedia just to make a post. That this tendency of mine diminishes the perception of intellegence on my part, I would readily conceed. Any suggestions?
